I also got A like the answers above me, but I'm a bit confused about others' method.

Part of the question includes |4x – 4|, which is the absolute value of 4x-4. This can either be (4x - 4) OR -(4x - 4), which is (-4x + 4).

Plugging in these two different options into the original equation, I get two different answers:

y = 2(-4x + 4) - 10
y = -8x +8 - 10
y = -8x -2

Y-intercept here would be equal to b in the y=mx+b equation, so the answer would be -2.

y = 2(4x - 4) - 10
y = 8x - 8 - 10
y = -18

The y-intercept here would be -18.

Since only -2 is given as an option, the answer is A.

What am I doing wrong?

A. -2
B. -1/4
C. 0
D. 2
E. 9/4

y = 2|4x – 4| – 10
y = 2|0 – 4| – 10
y = 2|– 4| – 10
y = 2(4) – 10
y = 8 – 10
y = -2
Hence, OA is (A).

Can you explain the reason why x is taken to be 0?

Hey,

The y-intercept is always when x = 0

Set x = 0 in the equation to find the corresponding y:

y = 2|4*(0) - 4| - 10

= 2|0 - 4| - 10

= 2|-4| - 10

= 2(4) - 10

= 8 - 10

= -2

y = -2

The answer is A
