Thinking of a plan B can help you do plan A more confidently. If you already know what you will do in case you have a bad day on your exam, you won't have the same fear. Imagine a person walking over a tight rope. If there was a safety net underneath, they would be less nervous.

A positive mindset may also be helpful. "Meh, even if I have a bad day, it's as if I'm seeing 60 fresh questions and doing an extra Official Mock. They'll even give me an ESR!".

Hi phambrenda,

Instead of thinking in terms of handling individual questions, try thinking in terms of your 'processes' (re: what notes do you take, how do you organize your work, what CAN you figure out with the information that you've been given, is there anything in the prompt that reminds you of work that you have done before, etc.). Sometimes, just working through those basic initial steps can help you to figure out how to approach the question. Beyond those suggestions, it's also worth noting that no question will ever "kill" your Score if you get it wrong - so if you genuinely have no way of even approaching a prompt, then you should 'dump it' and move on (and you can use the time that you 'save' on all of the other questions that you do know how to answer).

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

I got super nervous starting with the quant section as the first problem was something I wasn't familiar with and that really threw me off. How do you combat something like that?

Honestly, you just need to learn to roll with the punches. A big part of success on the GMAT is how you react to adversity, in real-time, on the actual exam. So, if you can't correctly answer a question that you know you should be able to or you are thrown by a particular question, you just need to do your best and then move on to the next one. However, you can't let these events throw you for the rest of the exam.
