What should I do next?  [#permalink]

I gave my 2nd GMAT attempt today and scored a 610. This was despite scoring 690 (V37, Q47) and 700 (V34, Q49) in the GMATPrep Mock 5 & 6 respectively in the last 3 days. Not sure what went wrong during the exam. Can you please suggest what should I do now? Should I retake the GMAT in the next 16 days?

Thanks

hi vikrambhatia ..
Welcome to GMATclub. I am sorry to know that you got an expected score. Please share your section wise score. Also, it would be great to know your routine on test day and a day before. Did you slept well? What resources you have used for preparation?
Re-taking the exam in 16 days will not be recommended if you want a score above 700. We can discuss after you provide answers on the questions above.

Hey sjas31,

Thanks for reply.

Section-wise scores:
Verbal- 28
Quant-46
Overall- 610
The day before the exam I attempted the GMATPrep Mock 6 and scored a 700(V34 Q49). I got about 6 hrs of sleep and was up by 7.30 am. Practiced a questions and then went for the exam scheduled at 2.30 pm. Now this was a bit unusual from other days as normally I get up only by 10-11 am, getting at least 8-9 hrs of sleep. However, not sure how much of an impact this had on the final day.
For preparation, I completed the OG 2018, OG Verbal Review 2018, 700-800 GMAT questions- CR & SC.

Hi,
Thank you for providing info. What do you think about the official exam? What was your order of taking sections? As per your optinion, were you getting easy questions? Can you brief about it?

I am asking these questions to understand the possible scenario and give my feedback and hope some expert will also reply you.

Your quants was ok i think you made mistakes in English i would advise take a English material like Manhattan or egmat and then give again .. only some analysis is required .. then you will rock the GMAT brother.. sometimes due to tension and pressure we make silly mistakes

Hi vikrambhatia,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential factors though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How did you score on your 1st Official GMAT (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)
2) How long did you study before each of your Official GMATs? How many hours do you typically study each week?
3) Have you used any other study materials besides the books that you mentioned?
4) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
5) What is your overall goal score?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi vikrambhaitia,

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT.

Assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than 610 on your GMAT. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your preparation, particularly in verbal, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, particularly for verbal, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them. With all this said, you may need more time to improve your verbal skills. When is the latest you can take the GMAT?

You also may find my article with more information regarding
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT helpful.

If you’d like more specific advice on how to improve your quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach back out. Good luck!

Hi Vikram, looks like practicing questions, was your strategy.

A lot of times, going systematically through concept building, plays a key role in your final score. Perhaps that was missing in your prep.
