What was the maximum temperature of Harare on May 15, this year?
(I) It was the hottest day of the year. the last year’s hottest was 44 C
(II) Every year the maximum temperature shoots up by 2 C

The answer is either C or E. I think it is E because 'it' in Sentence 1 does not necessarily mean May 15. Any opinions?

C.

Going by your train of thought, you can also conclude that the both statements aren't specific to Harare.
