Re: When m is divided by n, the remainder is 14. If m/n= 65.4, what is the [#permalink]
the remainder = \(14 = 0.4n = \frac{4}{10}n\)
so \(n = \frac{14*10}{4} = 35\)

A) 14
B) 27
C) 35
D) 42
E) 45

We can create the equation:

m/n = 65 + 4/10

m/n = 65 + 2/5

Since we are told the remainder is 14, we can also create the equation:

m/n = 65 + 14/n

We now can equate 2/5 and 14/n and determine n.

2/5 = 14/n

2n = 70

n = 35

Alternate Solution:

We can express the remainder as 14/n, and we know this is equal to 0.4. Thus, we have

14/n = 0.4

14 = 0.4n

35 = n

We need to know an important idea of division to resolve this problem:

Divisor= Remainder/decimal part of the quotient

Here, Divisor = n
Remainder = 14
The decimal part of the Quotient = .4

So, n = 14/.4 = 35
The answer option is C.
