When politicians resort to personal attacks, many editorialists criticize these attacks but most voters pay them scant attention. Everyone knows such attacks will end after election day, and politicians can be excused for mudslinging. Political commentators, however, cannot be. Political commentators should be engaged in sustained and serious debate about ideas and policies. In such a context personal attacks on opponents serve not to beat those opponents but to cut off the debate.

Which of the following most accurately states the main point of the argument?

(A) Personal attacks on opponents serve a useful purpose for politicians.
(B) Political commentators should not resort to personal attacks on their opponents.
(C) Editorialists are right to criticize politicians who resort to personal attacks on their opponents.
(D) The purpose of serious debate about ideas and policies is to counteract the effect of personal attacks by politicians.
(E) Voters should be concerned about the personal attacks politicians make on each other

A
Main point of the argument is that, politicians mudslinging has become a thing of routine to the public, so when the editorials are paying attention to these unworthy chatter they are wasting precious air time. In turn, helping the politicians .

Simplify the argument -

Mudslinging by politicians ends after election day --> Politicians CAN be excused for mudslinging.

HOWEVER(this indicates a contrast. Suggests that what is applicable to politicians may not be applicable to others).

Personal attacks on opponents serve not to beat opponents but to cut off the debate --> Political commentators CANNOT be engaged in personal attacks.

The last part of this is the main conclusion of the argument. Other sentences such as "Political commentators should be engaged in sustained ..." and "In such a context, personal attacks on opponents serve not to beat opponents ..." support that conclusion.

Which answer option states this? Option B.

Option A -
the argument does not talk about the usefulness of personal attacks.
Option C -
The author does not share her opinion on whether such criticism of politicians is right or wrong.
Option D -
We do not know what the purpose of serious debate is as it is not mentioned in the argument.
Option E -
We know that voters pay attention to such things. Whether they should be concerned about them or not is not mentioned.
