When several of a dermatologist's patients complained of a rash on just one side of their faces, the dermatologist suspected that the cause was some kind of external contact. In each case it turned out that the rash occurred on the side of the face to which the telephone was held. The dermatologist concluded that the rash was caused by prolonged
contact with telephones.

Each of the following, if true, provides additional support for the dermatologist's diagnosis EXCEPT:

(A) Many telephones are now manufactured using a kind of plastic to which some people are mildly allergic.

(B) Contact between other devices and the patients faces occurred equally on both sides of their faces.

(C) Most of the patients had occupations that required them to use their telephones extensively.

(D) Telephones are used by most people in the industrialized world.

(E) The complaints occurred after an increase in the patients' use of the telephone.

Hello guys!

The question expects us to find the reasons which are not associated with the contact between phone and our face.

Let's use POE to find our answer,

Eliminate Option A, if people are mildly allergic, then it is but obvious that rash was caused because of using the phone. This supports dermatologist's diagnosis. So, Drop this.

Eliminate Option B, if the contact occurred equally on both sides of the face then it explains that telephone users were right handed as well as left handed who had their preferences of talking. This also supports dermatologist's diagnosis.

Eliminate Option C, as the people had to use the phone extensively, it clears our doubt and proves that excess use of the phone has led to rashes on the face.

Option D sounds an exception here. So let's hold on with this.

Eliminate Option E, as there was an increase in the usage of telephones, this proves that increased use of telephones has led to rashes on the face.

Option D is exceptional as it does not support the dermatologist's diagnosis. It talks about a generalised case where 'telephones are used by most in the industrialised world'.
This is out of scope because we are least concerned about the telephone usage in the industrialised world.

Official Answer:- Option D

Thank you!

Regards,
Raunak Damle.

* Replying to your query Lake1987
The dermatologist concluded that the rash was caused by prolonged
contact with telephones.

The dermatologist is asserting that long use/ contact with telephones will result into a rash on the face. Given above were the reasons which supported the dermatologist's diagnosis. The exceptional was Option D because it was irrelevant and out of scope.

Hope this answer helps you my friend. Lake1987

Do let me know if the answer does not suffice you! I'll be happy to help.

Official Answer:- Option D

Thank you!

Regards,
Raunak Damle. ;)

I feel like even though the right answer seems to be D but I don't think this question can evaluate someone's critical reasonings skills. This is just tricky. Fair enough then !

Option D, is out of context. There is no connection between telephones being used by industrial countries and prolonged use causing infections.

Therefore, D would be the best choice for the except question.

"In each case it turned out that the rash occurred on the side of the face to which the telephone was held" => Already given that these patients were using phones.

Option D: 'Telephones are used by most people in the industrialized world' does not provide any additional detail about the dermatologist's patients at all.

Supports.

(B) Contact between other devices and the patients faces occurred equally on both sides of their faces.

This means other devices have nothing to do with the rash.

(C) Most of the patients had occupations that required them to use their telephones extensively.
Most patients. Had it been most people then this would have been a weakener.

(D) Telephones are used by most people in the industrialized world.
Used by most people means most people should have the rash. But we only know of the patients and don't know how many patients. The question states that most patients.

(E) The complaints occurred after an increase in the patients' use of the telephone.
Clearly supports
