C it is

A B D are ackward and with no logic fluency

C and E C makes sense

C does not make any sense or rather changes the meaning. It does not mention about the test of windows OS.
A,B and D - as explained above.
Hence it is E.

Cheers~

When testing the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, combined in it by the operating system’s creator, Bill Gates, were three big application packages.

(A) When testing the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, combined in it by the operating system’s creator, Bill Gates, were three big application packages.

(B) Combining three big application packages, a test of the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995 that Bill Gates created.

(C) When the windows operating system created by Bill Gates was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, three big application packages had been combined in it.

(D) Three big application packages, combined in Bill Gates’ test of the windows operating system in 1995 that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign.

(E) When Bill Gates tested the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, he combined in it three big application packages.

I think, Option C has a flaw. The usage of past perfect "had been combined" is not proper. If simple past "were combined" was used in option C, it would have become correct. I will opt for option E.

IMO "E"

A- use of "it" - pronoun ambiguity(can refer to the mass campaign also)- incorrect
B- that bill gates created ( does it refer to the mass campaign or the application) ambiguity - incorrect
C-use of "it" - incorrect
D-too wordy - illogically constructed statement
E- concise and use of "it" is justified by the use of "he" -correct

OA please :)

Hi
Between C & E i picked C
please post the OA

Before even checking for grammatical flaws we need to check whether a particular option preserves the meaning of the original sentence. The original sentence states that Bill Gates combined 3 big packages when he was testing Windows. Now option C distorts the meaning completely, it doesn't even mention testing. Also the information of who combined the 3 big packages is lost.

E is grammatically correct and preserves the meaning of the original sentence.

Hey Vercules- Nice question. What's the OA?

I chose C, you need to combine them BEFORE the mass distribution campaingn. He obviously didn't do that while he was doing the campaign. I mean he's smart but not to that extent :)

Let me know, Thanks

C cannot be the answer. It has 3 issues.
1. Dangling modifier
2. Incorrect use of past perfect
3. Missed "When testing" condition

E wins

E is the best option.
D's "combined in" is incorrect - and leaves the sentence hanging.
Any thoughts?

(A) When testing the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, combined in it by the operating system’s creator, Bill Gates, were three big application packages.
THe application packages were installed way before the test however the same meaning isn't conveyed therefore out

(B) Combining three big application packages, a test of the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995 that Bill Gates created.
THe inclusion of three application packages , presented as test is the prime product is rolled out is the conveyed meaning which is not the case therefore out

(C) When the windows operating system created by Bill Gates was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, three big application packages had been combined in it.
Even though the meaning is almost right who combined the 3 big programmes is clearly stated in E therefore out

(D) Three big application packages, combined in Bill Gates’ test of the windows operating system in 1995 that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign.
This gives us a meaning as though the test were due for mass distribution which is not the case therefore out

(E) When Bill Gates tested the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, he combined in it three big application packages.
THe meaning is perfect therefore let us hang on to it

Therefore IMO E
