Hi all!
I'd like to know what your thoughts are on which MBA schools I should apply to considering the ff:
- I have a total work experience of 5 years (3.5 years in IT sector, remaining yrs in Finance) but I plan to work in the technology sector or IT consulting after I graduate from MBA.
- Although I have not taken my GMAT yet (targeting at least a 690/700), I need to work on my applications now (esp the essays) so that I won't be pressed for time coming into the deadlines (targeting RD1 for schools with mid-October deadlines -at least 2 schools for RD1) and RD2 for schools with very early RD1 deadlines. (I'm only taking my GMAT on the 1st wk of October). I'm cramming. Hope it's not too late.
Please help me complete my list below - I'm pretty much decided on the 1st three schools here, but I need to decide on the other schools as well -
1. MIT
- very strong network and tie-ups with high tech companies. Based on the data I've seen, their top employers would include Google, Microsoft, Facebook, among others.
2. Haas
- clearly Haas is known to have an indisputable advantage in the tech industry considering its network and location
3. INSEAD
- i like INSEAD's one year program because the opportunity cost is less. plus it's closer to home (i'm from Asia and am looking at Insead's SG campus)
- however, i'm worried though that INSEAD is more of a gen mgt type of MBA? (please correct me if I'm wrong). i don't like the idea of graduating and not knowing what to do or where to go after
My other options would be -
- CMU (Tepper)
- Cornell (Johnson)
- UCLA Anderson
- Wharton - i like Wharton because of the reputation, but if I don't have much time, I'd be more practical (cos I'm under the impression that this is the hardest) and scratch it off my list.
I have to narrow down my applications to maybe five? I need two (2) "safety schools" also. MIT and Haas themselves seem to be tough schools already to get into.
Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
hey karist
all the schools u have listed are no doubt great schools, especially for Tech-MBA.But wouldn't you not keep all your eggs in the same basket.I mean, all the schools you have listed are Top10 schools and considering the competition don't you think it will be a safer bet to consider slightly low ranked programs as well(20th-30th).
Even i am giving my GMAT in Aug mid and given my pre-MBA exp,I wish to work in IT consulting post MBA.
Following is how I am classifying my schools.
Dream Schools-CMU,Ross
Good schools-Emory,Smith,Rotman,Iowa-Tippie,Indiana-Kelley,UNC-KF,Texas-McCombs
Safety schools-GAtech,Pittsburgh-Katz,Texas-A&M
Surely,my criteria for schools might be different from yours.I have taken into account program location , program costs as well as recruiting Tech companies.
Frankly, with an Engg degree from a non IIT institute in India and typical 4 yrs WE in IT in India i think MIT and Cornell might just be too far away(also bearing in mind the program costs).
Suggestions welcome.
Cheers.
