Meaning of the sentence: Length of Master's thesis is approximately one hundred pages.( so it could be 90 pages or it could be 110 pages, depending on the perspective of the author, who is making this statement, it could be how close is the approximation to 100). The usage of typical, conveys that there could be exception to it that it could be 10 or 1000 pages as well. On the other hand, Length of Ph.D thesis is usually over 200 pages conveys, that it could be even 10 pages( less than expected) in extreme situations.

So the sentence requires to contrast between the two type of thesis. Since there is no time involved( like Sam visited my office, while I was away) both while and whereas can be used, to show the contrast, interchangeably.
