Solution

To find:
• Which option is closest to 0.4

Approach and Working:
• $$\frac{1}{3} = 0.33$$

• $$\frac{4}{7} = 0.57$$

• $$\frac{3}{8} = 0.37$$

• $$\frac{5}{9} = 0.55$$

• $$\frac{1}{2} = 0.5$$

Therefore, $$\frac{3}{8}$$ is closest to 0.4.

Hence, the correct answer is Option C

The logic that we should approximate the values, helps in removing some answer options
B , D are out as they are > 1/2 (this logic helps us in difficult questions)

Remaining are
1/3 = 0.333
3/8 = 0.37 which is nearer to 0.40
1/2 = 0.50

Since 1/2 = 0.5 and both 4/7 and 5/9 are greater than 1/2, we can eliminate choices B and D.

Since 1/3 = 0.333… and 3/8 = 0.375, we see that 3/8 is the fraction closest to 0.40.
