If HSW is your dream don’t worry about what others say. You have a non-traditional background and a high GMAT. Get some really good recommendations and write some convincing essays about why MBA. Use a consultant if you can afford one.

Worst thing that will happen is a rejection, but the experience is worth it. I’d apply to a variety of M7 schools to keep my options open.

Hi taylorforbes,

Congrats on the strong GMAT. While your GPA is definitely on the lower side, a 750 will help to outweigh this. However, it doesn't offset it completely. Keep in mind that demographic factors in as well. Depending on your demographic, you may want an even higher score to offset your GPA. Of course, this is all individualized and after 770, the benefit in increasing is limited.

In addition, taking graduate-level courses can show your ability to succeed academically in a way a GMAT may not show. GMAT is most important but once you reach your full potential, showing extra courses is often advised. These can help boost your candidacy for H/S/W.

If you are at all open to considering beyond the M7, there are some programs in the T10-15 range that are rising in the rankings and don't weigh GPA as heavily. For instance, Duke Fuqua cares a bit less about the numbers and more about social impact.

Feel free to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com to further evaluate your situation and learn how we can help set you up for success. We work with many applicants each year who have lower GPAs but get into top programs if they ace the GMAT, have compelling work experience, and put together strong applications. Take a look at our comprehensive services to learn more!

Best,

I am doing some research on schools that I may have a good chance at getting into.
I'm concerned with my GPA though that locks me out of H/S/W? Top 5? Top 10?

I know things are 'holistically reviewed', but I also feel like, beyond the 80% range of the GPA, you are an outlier with statistically insignificant chances.
Are there any top schools that don't weigh a GPA as heaivily? I'm not really interested in beyond M7.

GMAT: 750
Undergrad GPA: 3.07 (Rank 45 - 50 University)
Yrs. Experience: 5
Background: Tech Entrepreneur (exited tech startup, have another business)
Reasonable philanthropic Pro Bono experience

Hi taylorforbes,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Well, your GPA is a concern, but your 750 GMAT score can compensate for it. You can mention any additional coursework which will help you reflect your ability to survive the quantitative rigor of business school. Your undergrad GPA is a minor part of your application to help connect these dots. So, even if you have a low GPA, it does not undermine your potential for the top MBA programs! You can still ace your applications! You may want to read an article on importance of GPA and how to explain a low GPA to the business school, this will instill the right confidence in you :)

Hope this helps!

The only thing you have to be careful about is your story. It should be authentic, reasonable, and demonstrating the core values of the business schools you're applying to. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to work on international experience, resume and LOR

Cheers!

Hello taylorforbes,

Hope this finds you well.

Yes, the GPA is low but your high GMAT can definitely help compensate for the same to a large extent.

If Harvard, Stanford, Wharton are schools that you want to really apply to, you must do so because, frankly, there is nothing to lose. :-)

All the best!
