(A) amount of research into the cause of acoustic neuromas have proven unsuccessful

(B) amount of research into the cause of acoustic neuromas has proven unsuccessful

(C) quantity of research into the cause of acoustic neuromas have proven to be unsuccessful

(D) cause research into acoustic neuromas has proven unsuccessful

(E) amount of research has proven unsuccessful into the cause of acoustic neuromas

IMO B

(A) amount of research into the cause of acoustic neuromas have proven unsuccessful

Explanation - 'have' is wrong here. Singular verb 'has' required for singular subject research.

(B) amount of research into the cause of acoustic neuromas has proven unsuccessful

Explanation - Only error of 'have' has been resolved here. It looks like the correct answer

(C) quantity of research into the cause of acoustic neuromas have proven to be unsuccessful

Explanation - 'quantity' used for countable nouns whereas 'research' is uncountable.

(D) cause research into acoustic neuromas has proven unsuccessful

Explanation - Although the verb error of 'have' has been resolved here, but it changes the meaning of the sentence.

(E) amount of research has proven unsuccessful into the cause of acoustic neuromas

Explanation - change of position has resulted into change of meaning of sentence.

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

Once again we deal with the noun amount, but here it's the subject of the first part of the sentence. Since amount is singular, the verb needs to be has been, so you can eliminate (A) and (C). Amount of research is better than cause research (which makes no sense at any rate), leaving you with (B) and (E). (E) creates a misplaced modifier, so (B) is the correct choice.

An 800 test taker is aware that each wrong choice is usually wrong for more than one reason. If she doesn't know how to spot or correct one error, she looks for another one.
