While most ecologists believe that the Striped Kangaroo of southern Australia should be added to the Endangered Species List, the World Conservation Union has stated that the kangaroo will be listed only if it could be proved to be a distinctly different species from other kangaroos.

A only if it could be proved to be a distinctly different species
B only if it is proved to be a different species, distinct
C if it can only be proved to be a species distinctly different
D if it was proved to be only a distinct and different species
E if it could be only proved to be a different species, distinctly

Source Grockit! Please Explain

Splits that came in my mind.
1) Distinct/Distinctly
2) Use of Only
3) concision
4) Use of comma before distinct (pause)

B wins!!

A only if it could be proved to be a distinctly different species
distinctly different is redundant
B only if it is proved to be a different species, distinct
Correct
C if it can only be proved to be a species distinctly different
Only if is required to stres on the fact that kangaroo will be listed only if something happens else it will not be listed
D if it was proved to be only a distinct and different species

The answer is B. If you understand the sentence structure , you could corner down your choices to a and b. a can't be the answer as the World Conservation Union will not add it to the endanger species if it is conditional. It has to be true. A looses.

Thanks

A only if it could be proved to be a distinctly different species
Wrong. X will be listed only if it could be proved..... Wrong grammar

B only if it is proved to be a different species, distinct
Correct. X will be listed only if it is proved..... Correct grammar

C if it can only be proved to be a species distinctly different
Wrong. ==> change meaning. Only if it.... >< if only it....

D if it was proved to be only a distinct and different species
Wrong. Same as C

E if it could be only proved to be a different species, distinctly
Wrong. Same as C
