I've been reading the forum for a while but haven't posted any questions so far, so here goes my first one:
Most schools require 2 or 3 recommendations, of which 2 are supposed to be professional recommendations. Schools also ask that one of these recommendations be from a current supervisor.
Unfortunately, I would prefer not to ask my current supervisor as this could jeopardize my current job and future prospects with my current employer. Additionally, I can really only think of one person within my company (my previous supervisor for whom I worked for 3 years prior to my current assignment, which I started 9 months ago) whom I can ask for a recommendation discretely.
My question is regarding the second professional recommendation. Does professional mean it has to come from someone at the workplace? I haven't worked for any other company since graduation, and am not in a role where I deal with external clients.
I had a leadership role in a professional organization outside of work, and could easily get a strong recommendation from one of the board members. I was involved with the organization for over two years, and held the leadership role in the last year.
So, should I bite the bullet and ask my current supervisor, or ask the other recommender from my extracurricular work?
Thanks!
