Definitely agree. IMO, the process of applying to b-school in itself is highly valuable to someone on many levels, regardless of the result (admitted at time x, or not). Many friends of mine actually are surprised yet have tremendous respect for me and the idea of applying to a school in the U.S. Whereas students in the U.S. (so I've heard) often move out of state (or at least leave their parents) to attend college/university, the general population of students here in Montreal stay within the city's reach (McGill, HEC Montreal and Concordia). Perhaps my initial question began because I had a feeling that some international students, at all costs want to make it to a top-tier program, yet base themselves solely on the profiles of others, neglecting their own story (that may be rich in culture, etc.)...

So, why do you think we put so much pressure on ourselves and place importance on what others may think?

Hi 555, welcome to the board. You've asked a question which I certainly don't have an answer to, and maybe no one really does.

You also make a good point about the overemphasis on statistics, etc. that you see. I think you'll find it less prevalent in this forum than others, but it's there nonetheless. Maybe I'd attribute it to our collective desire to relate to each other. Since we don't know each other's personal stories, sometimes it's easier to introduce ourselves by a GMAT score. But if you dig a bit, I think you'll find that everyone on the board has a very personal reason that they're getting their MBA, which they will sometimes even share with us. It seems to me that those who do the "best" are simply the ones who are best able to convey their reasoning through a variety of methods - essays, work path, and interviews. And that's a very subjective criterion, so we always go back to talking about what we can easily measure.

I'm also not entirely convinced that we do put too much pressure on ourselves, or place too much importance on what others may think. It's easy to draw that stereotype, but I think when you dig deep into the profiles of MBAs, the initial calling to the MBA was more often than not a noble one.

I think everyone is addicted to the forum so we just like to post stuff and then that gives other people an opportunity to post, it's the cycle of not doing work while at work.

well said lsuguy7 :-D

triple5soul - good luck for your GMAT - prepare well! I was in a similar position almost a year ago when I used to browse forums - wondering "why is so-and-so worrying! - such an excellent score - good gpa and work-ex" only now I realize that the real stress starts during the latter stages ie essays / interviews etc.

the app. process is a marathon, not a sprint - think of the GMAT as the first lap. Ace it. But then don't slack, after doing your best on the GMAT - give yourself a short break (not 6 months like I did!) and start on essays planning the process so you can execute solid applications in Round 1.
