IMHO the difference btw C & D has to do with the usage of restrictive modifier "that"

Taking a shot at Before Vs until by using a simple example. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Until - I plan on sleeping until the game starts. Meaning - I am going to sleep before the game starts but will wake up for it.
Before - I plan on sleeping before the game starts. Meaning - I am going to sleep before the game. That's it, you don't know if I'm going to be up for the game or not.

^these examples may be grammatically flawed but I'm just trying to present the difference b/w until and before.
The usage of "before" makes sense here!
