Hej Experts,
I would like to have your help. I could narrow down to A and E and was confused in the end. Then I tried the negation method to pick a suitable answer and picked E wrongly. I would like to have your help to see where I am wrong.
Negation of A : Less significant number of smokers(or very few smokers in other words) well past their teenage(i.e adults) will not take to the nicotine-less experience offered by e-cigarettes.
Does this break the Conclusion which says the sales of e-cigarettes are not expected to meet the high industry estimates. No. Sales will still be low.
(On deeper analysis, I realised that the negation could also be Significant number of smokers well past their teenage will take to the nicotine-less experience offered by e-cigarettes.In this case Conclusion falls apart but I am highly doubtful if this is the right method of negation.
Negation of E : Nicotine addiction makes it nearly possible for some adult smokers to switch from real cigarettes to nicotine-less ones. In this case, the conclusion fell apart since the sales of e-cigarettes will increase. So I picked this as the answer and got it wrong.
With teenage-smoking on the rise, many companies have introduced e-cigarettes aimed at helping teenagers quit smoking. An e-cigarette simulates the feeling of smoking without all the harmful effects of nicotine. However, teenagers addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes are unlikely to switch to e-cigarettes. Therefore, the sales of e-cigarettes are not expected to meet the high industry estimates.
Conclusion says : Teenager addicted to nicotine in cigarettes wont switch to e-cigarettes so e-cigarettes industry wont boom
we are talking about here teenagers and not any other adults or people
Doing POE
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A. Significant number of smokers well past their teenage will not take to the nicotine-less experience offered by e-cigarettes. -lets keep it
B. It is necessary for the smokers to be able to experience the feel of smoking even when they are trying to quit smoking. -didn t relate conclusion, talks abut experience, goes out
C. With people not switching to e-cigarettes, it is highly unlikely that there will be any decrease in the numbers of smokers. -firstly it is referring to people and not specific to teenages, secondly it diverts from conclusion
D. Teenage-smoking is a major concern that is being addressed by companies under their Corporate Social Responsibility agenda.-irrelevant, clear out
E. Nicotine addiction makes it nearly impossible for some adult smokers to switch from real cigarettes to nicotine-less ones. -hmm, was trap almost fell for first time, relooking at A and E, E talks about some adult smokers and which in not precise to conclusion
so A is best answer choice
Key takeway
1. Get conclusion straight in head
2. Do POE, if u r left with 2 answer choices
3. Revisit 2 best contenders -read conclusion again
and choose best answer
