Women working outside the home continue to earn only about tow-thirds of working men.
Eliminate all modifiers & reduce the sentence as mentioned below
Women earn about two thirds
Now put this in the answer choices

Here the earnings of working working are compared with earnings of working men.

(A) of working men : Women earn about two thirds of working men.!!!
(B) of the amount of working men : Women earn about two thirds of the amount of working men
(C) of the amount working men have : Women earn about two thirds of the amount working men have
(D) of the amount earned by working men : Women earn about two thirds of the amount earned by working men. Choice D fits Best.
(E) what has been earned by working men : Women earn about two thirds what has been earned by working men

IMO D

comparison is between the amount earned by the woman and the amount earned by the man, amount earned by woman is 1/3 of the amount earned by the man

A) of working men ---wrong comparison
(B) of the amount of working men ---wrong comparison
(C) of the amount working men have ---changes meaning, have is used as possession and hence wrong comparison
(D) of the amount earned by working men ---correct
(E) what has been earned by working men ----wrong tense usage

My reasoning:

A) comparison error here. Women cannot earn 2/3rds of working men. How do you earn a man?

B) comparison error again. This makes a mistake similar to A. You cannot earn an amount of working men.

C) this is an incomplete sentence. the amount working men have WHAT? Also there is no need to use perfect tense here

D) Correct comparison, no vagueness.

E) Incorrect, two-thirds what is not the correct idiom. also perfect tense is not necessary.
