From another thread:

X and Y must parallel statements.

example:

Correct : Rita considers tom a laggard.
Incorrect : Rita considers tom as a laggard.

X= tom
Y= A laggard.

Correct : Sam declared his dog the ugliest in the town.
Incorrect : Sam declared his dog to be the ugliest in the town.

X=his dog
Y= the ugliest

Correct : Please make my child a better singer.
Incorrect : Please make my child as a better singer.

X= My child
Y= a better singer

Correct : Rebecca assumed Tony the strongest lad in college.
Incorrect : Rebecca assumed Tony as the strongest lad in college
X=Tony
Y=the strongest lad

Hi
Option C: 'European poets to consider the lowliest members of society as'
is incorrect because the correct idiom is consider x y.

while here in option C it uses consider and as.
Consider has to be used alone without as/to be etc.

Well sarthaknav,

Consider XY idiom play a major role here.
but almost always a question can be solved by more than 2 rules.

Wordsworth was one of the many, as one of a person is a blunder in meaning and sense.
many poets considered the lowest members of society a valid subjects and wordsworth is one among them.
poet in singular form is wrong here. So A is wrong there itself.

option B implies Wordsworth was one of the first of European poets to consider the lowliest members of society to be.........
one of the first of structure is itself terrible.

option D.
Wordsworth was one of the first among European poets to consider the lowliest members of society as.............
one of many is enough to report the intended meaning.
among usage is redundant.
both indicate plural subject(poets).
one of the first among is awkward and wrong.

left with C and E.
option C: Wordsworth was one of the first European poets to consider the lowliest members of society as valid subjects for poetry..
option E: Wordsworth was one of the first European poets to consider the lowliest members of society valid subjects for poetry..

We can think of meaning here
poets consider lowliest members as subjects would be wrong since you cant consider a person as subject.

As can be Used to refer to the function or character that someone or something has.
it came as a shock
she got a job as a cook
He cares for her deeply as a friend and perhaps as a future wife.

I think this helps.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Please press +Kudos if you like this question

Pattern is One of X(plural)
so Poets is the right word

Idiom is: Consider X Y

hence E is correct

This question seems to rest on a single factor of idiom that is too apparent. Such a question is unlikely to appear on the GMAT. Therefore, for the sake of real-time practice, let me give my own suggestion to make the topic more helpful as given below, of course with the hope that the original poster may have no objection

Wordsworth was one of the first European poet to consider the lowliest members of society to be valid subjects for poetry.

A. was one of the first European poet to consider the lowliest members of society to be
B. is one of the first of European poets to consider the lowliest members of society
C. was one of the first European poets to consider the lowliest members of society
D. is one of the first among the European poets to consider the lowliest members of society as
E. is the first among European poets to consider the lowliest members of society

As is not used with consider.

Consider or Considered + (noun or phrase)

as is used with Regarded. i.e Regarded + as

Hope it helps.
