Written and rehearsed speedily, to fill the gap left by Donny’s Brain, which had been scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse, they reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone.

A) Written and rehearsed speedily, to fill the gap left by Donny’s Brain, which had been scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse, they reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone. Even the funnier ones feel solitary

B) Written and rehearsed speedily, and filled the gap left by Donny’s Brain, which had been scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse, they reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone. Even the funnier ones feel solitary

C) Written and rehearsed speedily, and filled the gap left by Donny’s Brain, which was scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse, they reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone. Even the funnier ones feel solitary

D) Writing and rehearsing speedily, and filling the gap left by Donny’s Brain, which had been scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse, they reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone. Even the funnier ones feel solitary

E) Writing and rehearsing speedily, and filling the gap left by Donny’s Brain, which was scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse, they reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone. Even the funnier ones feel solitary

Why the use of " had" is correct in "a" option.

Also please explain the change in meaning that will occur if we cange "written and rehearsed" to " writing and rehearsing".

Thanks :)

Hi jrk23,
As per the context of the sentence, we can very well deduce that 2 actions, as mentioned below, took place in the past.
1. Donny’s Brain(a play, perhaps) being scheduled to premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse.
2. Writing and reharsing* them(unknown - consider some scripts) speedily, which reveal the inner workings of minds isolated and alone.

When we have to specify 2 actions carried out in the past, we need to use Past Perfect Tense(had+verb-ed form) to describe the earlier event(in our case point 1) and Simple Past Tense to describe the later(point 2).

As per the above mentioned logic, Writing and Reharsing will not come into play as we need to use Simple Past(Written and Reharsed).

* - I have used Writing and Reharsing here because I have put myself in the past in order to highlight the events. Please don't confuse here.

None of the answers are grammatically correct as per the GMAT grammar.
'Written and rehearsed speedily' should be modifying some play/book/theater etc. But we do not know what is THEY in the sentence.

The way 'Even the funnier ones feel solitary' is hanging in the end, just shows it has been cut from somewhere and sprinkled with someone's imagination. The actual para would have some reference of THEY in previous lines, so one has to be careful in the resources one uses. It is not easy to replicate GMAT standards in verbal and specially in choosing wrong choices.

Please use reliable source.
