Using 1 i could have also deduced that z<y<x
however stmt. 2 by saying that x<y makes sure that x<y<z.

As per stmt 1 , distance of y from x + distance of y from x = distance of z from x.
This stmt tells us that y is between x and z.But we can not tell if x is to the right of y or z is to the right of y.
This answer comes from smt 2.

graphically stmt 1 can be shown as

X----------Y---------------Z
or
Z----------Y----------------X
