My begin our tour of the Elite Cluster with Yale SOM. The study of management has taken a somewhat unusual path at Yale. Yale started its program c.1976 offering the MPMM degree (a masters in private and public management). Yale stressed the management of both private and public organizations (Note: this is not as strange as it might seem since Chicago GSB was first called the College and Commerce and Politics in 1898 and many schools still include public and private management in the same College, School, or Department but usually with different degree tracks). Early attempts to make Yale's program more "conventional" were met with resistance and Yale is still known as a place that attracts "unconventional" MBA students. Yale SOM presents some obvious advantages. Yale University is regarded as one of the best universities in the world and has what generally regarded as the finest law school in the United States. It also enjoys considerable placement success with major finance firms. For students who are interested in public management, NPM, or the social implications of business Yale should receive serious consideration. There are also some disadvantages to contemplate. Yale SOM has few almuni compared to many of its Elite/UltraElite rivals. Unlike other relatively new entrants to the MBA field (such as Duke) the SOM took a long time trying to determine whether it should be a "business school" or something far broader. If you are not particularly interested in the more public-oriented forms of management, Yale strengths in these fields might not be too relevant to you. The center of the distribution is quite typical for Elite schools in the 700/3.5 range.

Yale has famously revised its core curriculum recently as described here: https://mba.yale.edu/MBA/curriculum/som_core.shtml I particularly like Yale's statement of the purpose of its revised curriculum- "(The new currulum) is designed for students with the highest aims: leaders who will head up Fortune 50 companies, start businesses that change society, manage the worldâ€™s most important non-profits, and serve in the highest echelons of government."

From what i remember, Yale SOM offered many of the usual concentrations before the advent of the new curriculum. Now, I can't find any mention of a concentration whatsoever, though they do say student take electives in their 2nd year. Included is a link to the list of over a dozen subject areas they offer, but again, nothing about concentrations. Can anyone shed some light on this? Does Yale now offer only a general management degree, with some flexibility to tailor the degree to one's interests? thanks

Just in case anyone else was wondering about Yale's concentrations, I got in touch with a current Yale student. Here's what she had to say: Yup, you're not missing anything on the website. They did get rid of official concentrations with the new curriculum. All the same electives are still offered, of course, but no more concentrations. Which I'm kind of happy about, because I honestly don't know what I would have picked (strategy, nonprofit mgmt, public mgmt...). This way I just get to just take the courses that I'm really interested in even if they cross old concentration boundaries...

Does Tuck take the highest subscores from different administrations of the gmat?

I like Yale's close-knit community and lots of extracurriculars.

Yale is not ranked nearly as high as a lot of other schools, but is it still a pretty solid value? Say I wanted to wind up in Ohio, would Yale be able to place me in a good position there? Of course, the name will carry, and it seems like they have a very good academic program. What about its management courses? Are they sufficient, above-average, or great?

Does Yale have links to entrepreneurship, like for example, Stanford ?

NYU and Yale are in dead-heat in many respects. It seems NYU has a slight edge in rankings while Yale has some advantages in its globally recognized brand name. Do any of the insiders have input to help differentiate the two schools? If going for finance, is NYU necessarily a the better choice? How is the finance recruiting in Yale as compared to NYU?
