Crickets.

Personally, I'm shocked about not receiving one. 750 GMAT, 3.1 in finance from an elite private university, 3 years experience in commercial real estate/consulting, great EC's including volunteer work, and I showed a lot of Yale love (including taking a day off from work to visit campus and stay overnight in New Haven). I received an invite from Columbia which also invites about 25% of its applicants.

I'm pretty frustrated that I put in all of the time, effort, and money to put forth a strong application and haven't received an invite. It doesn't help my frustration when I hear of applicants with GMAT scores 100+ points below mine getting invites. I understand that my GPA is below average but majoring in finance at one of the nation's top undergraduate finance programs wasn't a walk in the park.

i hear ya mba. i had a good, not great profile but also flew up from florida to visit/tour a class/spent a lot of time and effort putting forth what i thought was a good application. it is very frustrating, and dissapointing, at times. i think there is just a lot of variance in the application process (as there is everywhere in life).

i have another friend who applied who has a stellar profile, goals that fit the school, very interesting background/ec's and other extras and hasn't gotten a sniff either. who really knows. it's been an interesting journey, i just hope to get in somewhere come the end of the month.

Sorry that there've been no invites as of yet. I don't know this for sure, but I have a suspicion that SOM's yield from R1 went way up this year, either because more people see it as a valid 1st choice, or because Dean Snyder has directed staff and students to do some pretty serious outreach. (The new building and climbing in the rankings can't hurt, either.) My conjecture, (I could easily be talking out of my ass), is that they were expecting to get somewhere similar to last year's yield, (approx ~100 in R1), and it's coming in closer to ~120-130, so they are paring back on R2 invites. It did seem, however, that the waitlist grew for R1ers.

Regardless, nothing is set in stone yet. SOM R1 is very early, as is the deposit deadline, so they may see some folks fall off the list after getting into their dream schools, or getting big $ offers from another 10-15 school.

Denny, I certainly agree. US News top 10 ranking definitely backs up your claim. I've had the fear that maybe I applied one year too late given the impact of Dean Snyder and the increase in Yale's ranking.

However, still thought that I at least earned the chance to interview.

any update for R1 waitlisters? Do we expect any movement on the R2 decision date?

My waitlist feedback was no notable weakness to improve. Is it a good sign or bad sign? I have sent my love letter to SOM and retaken GMAT, will ask for an additional rec letter from a senior colleague. What else should I do to improve my candidacy?

You can't do much more than that. If you think your quant score was low, you may want to take a math class, but it's more something you should have started in January. I think the love letter was probably the most important thing.

I believe they do. In fact, based on the feed at the top of this forum, it looks like more folks are waitlisted without than are waitlisted with interviews. They may save the waitlist for those they suspect don't have SOM as a 1st choice.

Denny,

I am a little bit confused, the quant score of my first GMAT was 50 and it was 51 for the GMAT I just retook. And I am an engineer and play with numbers everyday. Maybe there are just too many engineer applicants?

Sorry - I didn't notice your score in your profile. I doubt it was your quant. It may have been something else, in which case, you've probably done everything possible to make your best pitch from the waitlist. Good luck!

You can also look at you post mba career goals essay. I rewrote and submitted a new essay when I was put on the WL (its recommended in the WL FAQ*). I made it very clear exactly what my goals were and why an MBA from Yale SOM would help (also made them slightly more ambitious.) I spent more time on it and had more people review it. I do not know if it factored into the committees decision, but I was offered enrollment at the end of January. Good luck.

*Vague Goals An MBA program is a fast‐paced two years. First‐year students start thinking about their job search during Orientation. Given this pace, students need a clear idea of their career goals when they apply.
What should I do?
• Submit an essay clarifying how your past experience and MBA with help you achieve your specific career goals.
