Hello everyone,
I am an international student (latino) with experience in pharma/healthcare consulting. I wish to continue on this path post-MBA either in a Big Pharma company, consulting, or taking the entrepreneurial journey.
I was admitted to Yale SOM with 20k per year scholarship. However, I have been in Wharton's waitlist for over a month and any update will probably come until mid-June or even July. Every week in Wharton's waitlist delays my process with Yale which includes background verification, international visa (several weeks), loan request, less housing options in New Haven, airplane tickets, etc.
My question here is: Should I continue waiting for Wharton even when the outcome is uncertain and with no scholarship? Or, should I just stop overthinking and go with Yale? This situation could also be interpreted as Yale vs Wharton (although without the offer from the latter
)?
Yale SOM- Strong brand in my home country: not planning to return medium term, but I suppose it will help in the long run
- Supportive alumni network: specially from my home country, but also in general in Slack groups and other forums. Also, the admission officers and staff from the school have been really supportive
- MBB and consulting placement: The employment report shows this, and I keep listening of students receiving offers from McKinsey, BCG, Bain.
- Ties to School of Public Health: Possibility of easily taking classes in SPH and other schools
- Great performance in rankings: I understand they will do everything to continue improving or stay in the 6 - 10 range
- Scholarship: 20 k scholarship per year is undoubtedly a big help for my finances
- New Haven: I kind of like the idea of living in a college town for two years (however, I've also heard pretty good things about life in Philly)
Wharton- Top 3 school worldwide and M7: We all love and hate the rankings
- Strong brand in the US: Not as strong as Yale in my home country, although I understand it is one of the most prestigious schools in the US
- Health Care Management Major (HCM): Possibility of interacting with a select group of individuals passionate about healthcare. I feel this program is what drives me the most to Wharton: healthcare specific classes, creating a community with the students of the major (during the application I talked to many students and alumni and they were really helpful), networking opportunities. Also, I feel this program would allow me to connect mostly with Americans (at Yale it might be easy to "stay" with the latinos)
- Entrepreneurship: More people founding start-ups or getting into VCs. Wharton has increased its focus on entrepreneurship (e.g., inauguration of Tangen Hall). Successful companies like Warby Parker and Cotopaxi coming from Wharton. I feel the connections and support for entrepreneurship would be much stronger at Wharton than Yale SOM
- MBB and consulting placement: Both schools are great, with more competition at Wharton?
- Pharma network: Wharton alumni in senior positions in top companies like Pfizer, Novartis, etc
- Bigger class: I'm not afraid of the bigger class as I would be able to connect at a more meaningful level with my cohort and with HCMers. Bigger class would also mean more people to meet and more activities
Thanks for reading until the end
