Assuming the rate is x sq. m per hr on the first day, on the second day would be (x-8) sq m/hr

And since a total of 14 hours were spent over 2 days, let's assume he spent t hours on the first day and (14-t) hours on the second day.

Therefore, 1st day's work + 2nd day's work = 240 sq m

=> xt + (x-8)(14-t) = 240

Solving, we get 7x + 4t = 176

That means both 7x and 4t need to be even or odd (can't be odd since 4t can never be odd)

Plugging the options,

(x-8) = 9 => x = 17. This will mean 7x is odd and 4t is even => not possible

(x-8) = 14 => x = 22. This will result in both being even and it should satisfy the equation since 7x < 176.

(x-8) = 19 => x = 27 Again, 7x would end up being odd => not possible

Therefore, answer is B
