Lemon Flavour = 18, Strawberry Flavour = 24, Orange Flavour = 18

For the Lemon Flavour
Worst case we can consider is, all the candies Sarah picks are either Strawberry or Orange.
To get atleast one lemon, she has to pick all of these strawberry and orange candies first which is 24 + 18 = 42.
So when she picks another candy for the 43rd time it will be a lemon candy.
So for the lemon flavoured candies it is 43 candies she must pick.

For the Strawberry Flavour
Worst case we can consider is, all the candies Sarah picks are either Lemon or Orange.
To get atleast one Strawberry, she has to pick all of these lemon and orange candies first which is 18 + 18 = 36.
So when she picks another candy for the 37rd time it will be a Strawberry candy.
So for the Strawberry flavoured candies it is 37 candies she must pick.

To get atleast 1 lemon flavoured candy, we need to remove the possibility of strawberry and orange
=> 24 + 18 + 1 = 43

Similarly for Strawberry flavoured candy
= > 18 + 18 + 1 = 37

Select for Lemon flavored the minimum number of candies Sarah must pick from the jar to ensure getting at least one lemon flavored candy, and select for Strawberry flavored the minimum number of candies Sarah must pick from the jar to ensure getting at least one strawberry flavored candy. Minimum number of candies to pick before being sure that at least 1 lemon candy is picked = (Total number of candies - number of lemon candies) + 1
In this case even if Sarah keeps picking non lemon candies till (Total number of candies - number of lemon candies) candies, the next candy she picks has to be lemon since those are the only ones left.(Variation of pigeonhole principle).
=>The answers are 43 and 37 respectively.

For lemon: Remove all other flavors , i.e 24+18 = 42.. Very next pick will be a lemon candy.. So 43
For strawberry..Remove the other flavors , i.e 18+18=36.. very next is strawberry. so 37

To find the min candies to be picked such that at least one is the lemon one would be imagining the worst case scenario where I have already picked up all the strawberry and orange candies which are 24+18 = 42 in total. The 43rd one should the the lemon one.
Similarly, To find the min candies to be picked such that at least one is strawberry would be imagining the worst case scenario where I have already picked up all the lemon and orange candies which are 18+18 = 36 in total. The 37th one should the the strawberry one.

Lemon flavoured-

One can choose 24 strawberry flavoured and 18 orange candies. The 43rd choice must definitely be lemon flavoured.

Strawberry flavoured-

One can choose 18 lemon and orange candies. The 37th choice must definitely be strawberry flavoured.

There are 60 candies in total in the jar, consisting of:

24 strawberry-flavored candies,
18 lemon-flavored candies,
18 orange-flavored candies.

let us assume worst case scenario. Only after picking up all the 24 -S and 18 -O, 1st lemon has been picked. So 24+18+1 = 43 is the answer for the first point.

Similarly 18 -O and 18 - L are all picked before picking up 1st S. Hence 18+18+1 = 37.

60 candies in total. 24 strawvery flavoured, 18 lemon flavoured, 18 Orange flavoured.

In order to oick atleast 1 lemon flavoured. Both strawberry and orange flavoured candies have to be picked in order to ensure 1 lemon candy is chisen which is 24+18+1= 43

In order to pick up atleast 1 strawberry flavoured candy, all of the lemon and orange candies have to be picked up to ensure atleast one strawberry candy is picked up. I.e 18+18+1 =37

In TPA questions its always better to form a strategy first before solving.

The stem tells us that; A candy jar contains 60 candies: 24 identical strawberry flavored, 18 identical lemon flavored, and 18 identical orange flavored. Sarah randomly picks candies from the jar.

And we have to select the minimum number of candies Sarah must pick to ensure at least one flavored candy of each type lemon and strawberry.

To solve this question we have to see the underlying logic that for any particular type of candy Sarah will have to pick all of the two other types of candies and then one of the particular type of candy in question to get the minimum total number of candies.

So for strawberry It’ll be 18+18+1=37 and,
For lemon It’ll be 24+18+1=43

Hence fill the respective options here.

lemon candy-
- Sarah needs to ensure in the minimum number of picks that she has at least one lemon candy, hence we will consider the case where all the picks to a certain point lead to the exhaustion of the other types of candy, hence
24(strawberry) + 18(orange)= 42 chances, now the next pick will 100% result in a lemon candy, hence 43.

Strawberry-
Similarly, 18(orange) + 18(lemon)=36, 36+1=37 chances.

For Lemon:
In the worst case scenario, Sarah can pick out all the strawberry and orange candies before picking out the lemon candy. So, to be sure that atleast 1 lemon candy is picked up, we'll have to remove all orange and strawberry candy
Hence,
24(Strawberry candy)+18(orange candy)+1(lemon candy)
= 43

Similarly for Strawberry candy,
Select all orange and lemon and finally the strawberry candy
18(Lemon candy)+18(Orange candy)+1
=37

To determine the minimum number of candies Sarah must pick to ensure getting at least one lemon-flavored candy and at least one strawberry-flavored candy, we need to consider the worst-case scenario where she picks all the other types of candies first.

Lemon Flavored:
There are 24 strawberry-flavored candies and 18 orange-flavored candies.
