So we can see till 1:30 PM 170 pages done.

For till 6:00 PM acc to me no calculation is needed, total working time is more than double in each case, additionally we will have more added to the total by the person who started at 1:00 PM.

So answer should be much more than 340, hence ans is 512

12 Days of Christmas 2024 - 2025 Competition with $40,000 of Prizes

This question was provided by GMAT Club
for the 12 Days of Christmas Competition

Win $40,000 in prizes: Courses, Tests & more

At a publishing company, five editors—A through E—review manuscripts at different but constant speeds, starting at different times and continuing until 6:00 p.m. on the same day:

  • Editor A: Started at 9:00 a.m., reviewing 12 pages per hour.
  • Editor B: Started at 10:00 a.m., reviewing 16 pages per hour.
  • Editor C: Started at 11:00 a.m., reviewing 18 pages per hour.
  • Editor D: Started at 12:00 p.m., reviewing 10 pages per hour.
  • Editor E: Started at 1:30 p.m., reviewing 20 pages per hour.

Select for x the total number of pages reviewed by 1:30 p.m., and for y the total number of pages reviewed by 6:00 p.m. Make only two selections, one in each column.
Calculating pages reviewed by 1:30 pm (x):
A: From 9:00 am to 1:30 pm is 4.5 hours. 4.5 * 12 = 54 page
B: From 10:00 am to 1:30 pm is 3.5 hours. 3.5 * 16 = 56 pages
C: From 11:00 am to 1:30 pm is 2.5 hours. 2.5 * 18 = 45 pages
D: From 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm is 1.5 hours. 1.5 * 10 = 15 pages
E: Started at 1:30 pm, so 0 pages.
Total: 54 + 56 + 45 + 15 + 0 = 170 pages.
Calculating pages reviewed by 6:00 pm (y):
A: From 9:00 am to 6:00 pm is 9 hours. 9 * 12 = 108 page
B: From 10:00 am to 6:00 pm is 8 hours. 8 * 16 = 128 pages
C: From 11:00 am to 6:00 pm is 7 hours. 7 * 18 = 126 pages
D: From 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm is 6 hours. 6 * 10 = 60 pages
E: From 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm is 4.5 hours. 4.5 * 20 = 90 pages
Total: 108 + 128 + 126 + 60 + 90 = 512 pages.
Answer: x = 170, y = 512

Let's solve this problem step by step:

1. First, let's calculate the pages reviewed by each editor by 1:30 p.m. (x):

* Editor A: 4.5 hours × 12 pages/hour = 54 pages

* Editor B: 3.5 hours × 16 pages/hour = 56 pages

* Editor C: 2.5 hours × 18 pages/hour = 45 pages

* Editor D: 1.5 hours × 10 pages/hour = 15 pages

* Editor E: Just started, 0 pages

Total pages by 1:30 p.m. (x) = 54 + 56 + 45 + 15 = 170 pages

2. Now, let's calculate the total pages reviewed by 6:00 p.m. V):

* Editor A: 9 hours × 12 pages/hour = 108 pages

* Editor B: 8 hours × 16 pages/hour = 128 pages

* Editor C: 7 hours x 18 pages/hour = 126 pages

* Editor D: 6 hours × 10 pages/hour = 60 pages

* Editor E: 4.5 hours * 20 pages/hour = 90 pages

Total pages by 6:00 p.m. (y) = 108 + 128 + 126 + 60 + 90 = 512 pages

Therefore, the correct selections are:

x=170 pages (by 1:30 p.m.)

y= 512 pages (by 6:00 p.m.)

The answer is 170 and 512

calculate 9am to 1.30 pm which is 4.5hrs = 4.5*12+3.5*16+2.5*18+1.5*10 = 170
Calculate 9am to 6pm which will be 9*12+8*16+7*18+6*10+4.5*20 = 512

Step 1: Calculate pages reviewed by each editor by 1:30 p.m.
Editor A: Works from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. = 4.5 hours.
Pages reviewed: 12×4.5=54.

Editor B: Works from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. = 3.5 hours.
Pages reviewed: 16×3.5=56.

Editor C: Works from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. = 2.5 hours.
Pages reviewed: 18×2.5=45.

Editor D: Works from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. = 1.5 hours.
Pages reviewed: 10×1.5=15.

Editor E: Starts at 1:30 p.m. = 0 pages reviewed by 1:30 p.m.

Total by 1:30 p.m.:
54+56+45+15+0=170.

Step 2: Calculate pages reviewed by each editor by 6:00 p.m.
Editor A: Works from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. = 9 hours.
Pages reviewed: 12×9=108.

Editor B: Works from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. = 8 hours.
Pages reviewed:
16×8=128.

Editor C: Works from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. = 7 hours.
Pages reviewed:
18×7=126.

Editor D: Works from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. = 6 hours.
Pages reviewed:
10×6=60.

Editor E: Works from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. = 4.5 hours.
Pages reviewed: 20×4.5=90.

To solve this, let's calculate the total number of pages reviewed by each editor up to 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. separately.

EditorHours till 1:30 pmPages reviewedHours till 6 pm Pages reviewed
A4.512*4.5=54912*9=108
B3.516*3.5=56816*8=128

D1.510*1.5=15610*6=60
E004.520*4.5=90
Total170 pages512 pages

Hence we can fill these respective options.

A -

From 9 to 1:30 is 4.5 hrs.
in 4.5 hours, A reviews 4.5*12 = 54 pages

B -

From 10 to 1:30 is 3.5 hrs.
In 3.5 hrs, B reviews 3.5 * 16 = 56 pages

similarly, for each of them we will calculate their per hour rate * the time they took from their starting time till 1:30 pm.
and then we will add all these results and get,

170 pages for x.

For y,

from 1:30 to 6 it is 4.5 hours, so we will multiply each of their rates by 4.5 and add the results in 170 to get 512.

x = 170, y = 512
