ncp - Mich has one of the lowest avg Gpa's amongst all the top 20 schools as well which might have pulled down its rankings a little.

I need to go get a copy of that and see what the methodology is.

with the specialty rankings, oh my, maybe I should have applied to Kelley or Marshall since their entrepreneurship is ranked higher than Haas... :P

And Haas finance higher than Kellogg? Hrm... I'm not complaining!

BTW, UCLA is a GREAT school. Just because people don't talk about them does not mean they don't have the goods (or at least fit the methodology) to get ranked high. :P

US News is known to do that- that is one of the biggest complaints against its rankings. I might have posted this link before but this is a great analysis of the rankings:

Dabots and Darden 2010 - the list is legit. I just read the issue at Barnes and Noble (yes, I am too cheap to buy it).

darn it
Fisher (Ohio State) went down to 27th, and Krannert (Purdue) went down to 33rd

Ohio State admitted me, Purdue might (not sure), and Anderson will reject me tomorrow

I want to go to a program that is consistently well-recognized, so I might have to get into a Top 15 program to achieve that

Therefore, it seems like I will have to put off my MBA for a while, :(

If only Fisher would have moved up a bit...

Tell me you aren't serious....I feel sorry for you...

Its pretty interestign to ignore the rankings and look at the overall score. Once you start clustering them based on score, it does seem to follow the famous Hjorts clutering system.

HS
W Chic K MIT- this is surprising as I think that Wharton is losing ground to the other 3.
Tuck/Haas/CBS
Stern/UCLA/Ross/Yale/Cornell/Duke/Darden- 5 points separate the #10 and the three schools at #14. A $1000 difference in the avg starting salary could very well change the rankings around or your relative importance of these various factors.

Hardestadt
Manhattanmba at the BW forum has posted the latest US News rankings:

School/Overall Score/Peer Assessment/Recruiter Assessment/Avg GMAT

    1. HBS / 100 / 4.8 / 4.4 / 713
    1. Stanford / 100 / 4.8 / 4.4 / 721

    3. Wharton / 95 / 4.8 / 4.2 / 712

    4. Chicago / 93 / 4.6 / 4.3 / 709
    4. Kellogg / 93 / 4.7 / 4.3 / 704
    4. MIT Sloan / 93 / 4.7 / 4.2 / 705

    7. Haas / 89 / 4.5 / 4.0 / 710
    7. Tuck / 89 / 4.3 / 4.0 / 713

    9. Columbia / 88 / 4.4 / 4.2 / 707

    10. NYU Stern / 84 / 4.2 / 3.9 / 700

    11. UCLA / 83 / 4.2 / 3.8 / 704

    12. Michigan / 82 / 4.4 / 4.0 / 700

    13. Yale SOM / 80 / 4.2 / 3.9 / 700

    14. Cornell / 79 / 4.2 / 3.8 / 682
    14. Darden / 79 / 4.1 / 3.8 / 688
    14. Duke / 79 / 4.3 / 4.0 / 690

UCLA is the biggest gainer, but Yale has gained some ground as well, interesting. Must be the new curriculum.

With most of the vital stats being equal, the only thing that counts is reputation. HSW will sit atop the UE's. You'll have the rest that fill out the M7. A school or two fighting to get into the M7 and the rest jostling for position among the 8-15 group.

Tweaking the methodology to fix the rankings and schools jumping 15-20 spots just makes all of these rankings look plainly ridiculous.

I actually don't care that USNEWS teaks the methodology to present a ranking that matches their subjective ranking. The thing is that there are just too many factors to rank a school (if you can do so at all). School rankings can never be completely objective. So any ranking system that tries to be completely objective in ranking schools is going to fail. FT, WSJ, Economist, Forbes and Businessweek .. all seem silly at some point or the other.

And I actually like the fact that USNEWS seems to be moving to a Hjort's-like clustering system. That is a more logical way of ranking/grouping schools.
