Seeking some advice from fellow bschool applicants

Background- I took the GMAT in September 2017 and got a 740 (49Q, 42V), I decided then I was going to start applying to bschool (R2). I applied to Fuqua, Kellogg, and Sloan and got dinged at all three. After seeing all three dings, I felt extremely disappointed trying to figure out what I did wrong. Areas i thought were my weakness include my years of experience (55 months by matriculation), my recommendations possibly (one is my current supervisor, the other was a previous supervisor both of whom I don't think would put enough effort to write a very good letter), or my essay (my essays for all of the schools dictated why I wanted to move away from my technical role in oil and gas and move into a operations optimization/improvement role and how bschool would give me the critical thinking skills to achieve this and have an impact on an organization). The other area I think may have hurt me is that I didnt visit these three schools.

Any advice? Should I apply R1 for Fall 2019 matriculation?

Hey chestud13 ,

First thing you need to do is get some motivation. :)

Read my MBA journey debrief from my signature.

Get up and fight for it until you succeed. I have also mentioned a couple of tips. I hope that helps. :)

1) Apply in R1
2) Get professional help with "Suggesting" your recommendations
3) Same for your essays (complete app)

Visits NOT required. GMAT score already ok. Profile also decently diverse

Hey chestud13

Thanks for posting and sorry to hear about your dings. So 740/3.51 is a good combo but we are missing so much other information! It looks like you are an engineer perhaps? For my engineering clients, I always recommend that the resume spends less time on techie stuff and more time on leadership, biz dev, business impact, training, and mentoring. An MBA is a leadership and management degree, so you've got to really show that you are "that guy." Unfortunately, the 740 alone will never be what gets you in. (I've seen 770s and 780s get dinged too!)

A couple of other thoughts:
Sloan is a small program with a low admit rate. I don't think people always realize that! It just means that there are so few spots available.
I think I see on one of your other posts that you were given a Kellogg waiver. Not my favorite! I always recommend that clients who are given a Kellogg interview waiver find an excuse to visit campus and interview in person. This is a competitive process!
Fuqua keeps getting tougher and tougher and if you didn't prove your understanding of "Team Fuqua," it can be a tough sell.

My suggestion for you -- before you reapply -- is that you consider our Ding Review service. Of the three schools, I'd recommend doing the Ding review with the Fuqua app because it's the most comprehensive. (Although I think they took away the ability to generate a PDF so the Kellogg app MIGHT be better, but then we can't look at your video.) With the Ding review, we'll give you feedback on your overall profile and your application execution and we'll suggest a reapplication strategy. There's a 30 minute phone conversation to discuss the analysis too. Take a look and feel free to contact me for more info: https://shop.mbamission.com/collections ... t-strategy

I hope that helps!

Hi Chestud,

Looking at your profile description and your post, it won't be possible to figure out where exactly you went wrong. So I'd say the dings are a combination of multiple factors that consistently worked against you. Don't lose heart over it, because its now in the past. I'd encourage you to introspect and thoroughly evaluate every component of your application, to understand how you can make the applications 'winners' this year. This will include a deeper look into your :
1. resume- do you show the impact and leadership, are your pointers direct enough for the reader to understand the impact?
2. essays- two of these b-schools are fiercely proud of their collaborative culture and pay it forward spirit. Did you showcase these well enough?
3. Recommendation- you already know these could have been compromised. A better preparation strategy for the recommender would help.
4. Goals and why MBA? This is utterly important and I can't comment on this until I see your essays and how the goals fit the overall story.
5. B-school selection- Reapplying to all three will be a risky strategy, so I'd recommend you research a few other options for this year, even though you may consider reapplying to 1-2.

Feel free to reach out.

Hi chestud13

All the schools you applied to are extremely tough to get it and you applied in Round-2. That might your first mistake. Probably apply in round-1. And diversify the list of schools.

Apply to 2-3 top 10, 2-3 top 10 to 20 schools. You have a strong GMAT score. Probably, your essays, resume and other minute details in the app would have been a let down.

Get a ding analysis and see what went wrong and correct those in coming months. And prepare for R1. You will definitely get into other top programs. And as someone said in this post, reapplying would be tricky for these schools unless these programs are your top priority.
