I read a few motivational posts of people who scored well below their target score and then achieved a great score on their 3rd/4th time taking the GMAT and those posts helped give me some additional confidence that got me the 760 (48Q, 47V) I got earlier today, so I thought I would post a quick summary of my story in case it helps anyone...
Looking back on my first attempt (3 months ago), I wasn't as prepared as I thought and my nerves and a bad night's sleep I think were mostly to blame... I canceled that score and was determined to focus on my weakness, timing and quant in particular.
For my second attempt (I took about 6 weeks after my first), I focused my studying heavily on quant (especially since my verbal was consistently 38/39 on practice exams). After i got truly comfortable with some of the quant basics i still had trouble with, i focused on making sure i could perform a lot quicker (this was done purely through taking practice test after practice test)... I ended up getting a Q49 and V33... I was so disappointed that my verbal was so much lower than my practice test (btw, i used the official gmat tests - both sets - and veritas exams)..EDIT: I forgot to mention that i ran out of time on the verbal section and had to blindly guess on the last 5 questions or so (as i mention below, i was still focused on the quant section i had just completed).
For this last attempt (also about 6 weeks after), I was confident that i could score high 40's in quant (based on more practice tests), so i focused mostly on the verbal fundamentals again (although tedious, it was helpful to go back and review the Manhattan strategy guides for basic rules, sentence structures, etc.)... For the 3 or so weeks leading up to my last attempt, i did two practice tests every weekend and reviewed some practice problems if i had time during the week... But i think the biggest difference this time was mindset and believing in myself!
To my pleasant surprise, i was able to achieve a 47V (which was obviously the difference maker in my score)... I really think that CONFIDENCE was the single most important difference in my approach to the test this final time.. Both of the previous times, i was still thinking about the quant section i had just completed and trying to remember if i had seen any really difficult questions, too many easy ones, etc. and i think that affected my verbal performance. This time around, i was very confident going into the test, told myself i was going to do well, and i tried my hardest to only focus on the question that was on the screen (and nothing else).
If you haven't performed well on your first, second, third gmat just remember that the next time you take it it's a completely new test and your previous performance does not affect this time around! Others have said it as well: confidence and mindset going into the test are extremely important!
