Took the GMAT for the first time in June. Even though I used to get around 670-710 in my prep tests, I felt that in my actual exam I could get a 710+. This was probably my biggest mistake. For the first time, I did all the standard books ( GMAT 12th edition, Kaplan, Princeton etc.) Was fairly confident about Quantitative and consistently scored 43+ but was weak in Verbal. Could not get my score to reach 40's. So my final score for my first GMAT was 650 ( 34 verbal and 45 Quant). Clearly this was not enough for the schools I was looking at.
Gave up hope for a couple of months and decided again to write in September. This time used a lot more books. The techniques in GMAT club of maintaining an
error log helped me a lot. Since I was fairly confident of Quantitative I spent most of the next two months on Verbal.
MGMAT saved me this time. The strategy and techniques in this series of books are very very helpful . They breakdown the concepts esp in Verbal to a very basic level and walk you through how to go about solving an extremely unfriendly looking sentence correction and critical reasoning passage. I also did the additional problems from the Official Verbal and Quant Guide. These books are mainly good for additional practice once you have your basics figured out. The Bible for Critical Reasoning was also a very good book for CR
Another tip I got from the GMAT club was to do a lot of tests. Towards the last two weeks of my exam all I did was tests. The six tests you get with
MGMAT were very helpful. I also made use of all the free tests you can get on various websites. These last few tests helped my figure out my pace and my speed and work on it
Eventually I got a 740 ( 40 verbal and 50 quantitative) . I Could not be happier with my score.

I think I worked much much harder the second time and worked especially on my weakness.
Thank you GMAT club and all its members for this very helpful forum.
