Thank you so much for sharing. Your story is inspiring to me because I am in the exact same position that you were in before you got admitted into Fuqua.

I just took my 1st GMAT today and scored 640 (Q48/V31). I'm incredibly disappointed because I had been consistently scoring 710+ on my official practice tests. I felt like giving up but your story reminded me that the GMAT is just a means to an end. I have an excellent academic track record (3.9 GPA) and a unique life story to share with the admission committees. Having read your story, I am going to devote more time into the other areas of my application rather than obsess over the GMAT. I will still retake the GMAT, but I have decided not to get all jacked up about the exam again (I believe my GMAT obsession created a lot of unnecessary pressure during my test).

Thank you again for sharing. Here's a reminder to all other members who are in similar positions: Put the GMAT in its appropriate place and NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Congrats on getting into a great school.

I found this online -

FAQs:

What is the average GMAT score for applicants accepted to The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University?
The average GMAT score of applicants accepted to The Fuqua School of Business in 2011 was 689. The GMAT range (10th-90th percentile) was 630-740.

So 660 was not really that far from the mean, and it certainly falls quite comfortably in the range listed above. Nonetheless, you had great insights and experience in terms of doing all the research and you got an excellent approach. Congrats again :)

Thanks a lot! I couldn't find tht average GMAT for this year on their website. But as stated on Bloomberg, it's 697 with a 80th percentile range between 640-740.

About my score, I agree! it does fit into the range of admitted applicants pool and I'm not trying to sell it as a miracle. But generally speaking, coming into the competition with almost 40 scores below average will only make the 20-25% admission chance (assuming you start your chances with the school's acceptance rate in mind) noticeably less. Fitting into the range does not guanrentee having high chances of admission. In fact, for my case with 660, there were far more appliacnts with higher scores that the school can ever admit for the class. that on its own should put enough stress on me as I imagine it did on similar applicants. It's typically the case (For admitted students) that the less your GMAT score, the stronger and more unique the other parts of the application are relative to the rest of the admitted students.

My biggest takeaway from the whole applicantion experience is that, in the cases that you are planning to apply in more than 1 year from now (Let's say in 2 years), then put your full focus on the extracurriculars and getting the most out of your work experience and make the GMAT the last thing you do before starting to apply (Of course allow enough time to staudy and take the exams). You'd often find out that your EC and work experience were what helped most demonstrate the type of person you want to show to the admission folks.

bottom line, falling into the the lower end of the 80 percentile range (I fell into the lowest 20% of it) does logically leave you in the game, but you still need to be realistic that it is not as "still in the game" as the schools sell it. you are simply expected to do better than the rest in the other parts of the application. Thanks again for your nice words!
