Hi all
I just finished my exam and very happy (but mainly relieved) with my score.
I took the gmat 3 weeks ago and got a score of 690 (Q46 V39). Although I know 690 is not a terrible score, I didn’t think it reflected the amount of prep I had done / score on my practice exams. I cancelled the score immediately.
I knew I had to retake it but I was completely lost on how to go about my prep. I had exhausted all the 6 gmat practice tests, had gone through all the problems in the OG guide and the quant and verbal review guides.
I panic emailed
e-gmat the same night asking if someone could review my ESR and provide some guidance. I was assigned a mentor who was going to help me for the next few weeks.
Aditee (from
e-gmat) was very helpful. She made me take some initial diagnostic quizzes on
e-gmat scholaranium and based on that we decided to tackle CR first as that was my weak area in verbal. I took so many quizzes but was just not able to raise my score and was getting frustrated. Aditee (who was very patient) keep reiterating the importance of an
error log and carrying out a strategic review. Up to this point I had decided that errors logs were time consuming and it wouldn’t work for someone like me. (Despite the many debriefs on this forum advising everyone to keep an
error log). Don’t be like me - just please keep an
error log. I finally gave in and started my
error log - within 2 days my accuracy shot up from 60% to +80%.
We then moved on the quant. This time I diligently kept an
error log and didn’t dismiss any of my mistakes as “silly errors”. Once my abilities in the sub sections were >80%, we decided to move to sectional mocks.
I scored consistently over 80% accuracy in these sectional mocks and decided to book my exam for the 1st of June.
Test Day Experience:
I had the worst stomach ache the day before my exam and was up all night throwing up. I was in two minds if I should cancel the exam or not but decided to see how I feel in the morning. I had convinced myself that this can be another practice attempt and I will take it another day when I felt better. I had to leave home at 1pm and till about 12:30pm I was curled up on the sofa. I wanted to revise my
error log and some additional notes on test day but I didn’t have the strength.
I arrived at the test centre and started the exam with AWA and IR. I came out for the first 8 minute break and was feeling a bit better, so I had a bar of chocolate and went back in to tackle quant. I knew I was messing up on quant as for a few PS questions I was just not getting the same answer as any of the options. I was also running behind on time. Quant finished and I was quite upset as I just really didn’t want to retake this exam.
I felt okay during the verbal except a few tricky SC questions where I ended up guessing between 2 options. I click the next button and actually convinced myself that the score was definitely below 700 as I thought it went worse than my first attempt. However was very pleased to see the 750 (Q49 V44) on the screen.
Now for the helpful bit
Resources used
1) OG guides + the quant and verbal reviews
2)
e-gmat: the course is very detailed and quite helpful for someone who needs to learn everything. (My first diagnostic test back in 2020 was a 570). I found the questions on scholaranium quite hard, esp the quant and decided to skip them before my first attempt. In hindsight I think this was a poor decision. Although the questions are harder, it’s still good to solve them to learn the process. Which is what I ended up doing in the 3 weeks between my 2 attempts.
E-gmat mentorship program is also fantastic. Aditee and I would email each other on a daily basis and it was a nice feeling to see that someone else also wanted you to do well and pushing you in the right direction.
E-gmat also has some helpful videos about how to carry out strategic reviews. After following the advice on the videos, I improved my accuracy on CR to 80%.
