Dear Admissionado team,
could you give me an honest assessment of my chances at top US & EU B-Schools (e.g. MIT/Kellog/Booth/Yale or LBS/INSEAD/Judge)?
Details of my profile:
Bio: Age 26, Male, German.
GMAT & Grades: 730 (Q47, V44, IR 7, AWA 6) , 3.4 GPA in Business Administration with a focus on the transport sector
Work Experience: 4 years full-time work experience in the transportation sector (mnc 10.000+ employees), one promotion, currently work in a very international analytics/project management role (multi-week assignments this year in Korea, China, Spain, UAE, US).
I do not have a formal leadership position but the workstreams I lead on the projects regularly include employees that are technically more senior than me in terms of age and position.
Both of my LORs will come from people to whom I report (direct supervisor & head of the department) and both expressed that they are very willing to help me succeed in my applications.
The head of my department went to MIT Sloan himself, not sure if that its a plus when applying to that school?
Education: Graduated in 2015, relatively small but growing B-school in Germany.
Extracurriculars: I have been the course representative in college and held some presentations about stem-cell donations after undertaking a procedure to donate myself.
My extracurriculars are generally quite weak I am afraid.
After my MBA I plan to transition into consulting after having worked with MBBs on multiple projects in the past.

You've got a solid GMAT -- it's not high enough to be a differentiator at top 10 schools but you've checked the box there. You also have some unique work experience coming from the transportation sector & good international exposure. The fact that you are German is a bit unique for US schools. Sounds like you have some solid indirect leadership experience as well. It would be ideal if you had more extracurriculars but it's not a deal breaker. There are strategies around that depending on the specifics of your material. In terms of recommenders, they ideally want to see a direct manager or someone who has played that role. If your dept head has managed you directly then a LOR from him for MIT would help, but if he has not directly overseen your work he might not be the best choice (although he could still informally put in a good word for you if he has any connections to the adcom). LORs need to be full of specific, detailed examples to illustrate your strengths so if someone has not directly managed you it's often difficult to provide those specifics, and most schools directly state that they prefer LORs from direct managers.
I think assuming some strong essays & post-MBA goals you have a good shot at some top schools! Reach out to us if you need any help thinking through your strategy & your story.
