Hello everyone,
I am a male from Chile, 28 years old. I have over 4 years of experience in strategy consulting, 4 promotions, leadership role in my office, track record of volunteering, and wide international experience.
HOWEVER, my GPA is on the lower side. I have a 4.9 out of 7.0 GPA, which would be around a 3.0 GPA in a 4-point scale. I do have attenuating circumstances, and did finish my last 5 semesters with grades around 3.7 - 4.0, but the fact is that I did not manage to stand out in college. I rank in the bottom third of my graduation class.
It’s also worth mentioning that my low was very low. I faced personal problems that lead me to fail several classes in my third and fourth semesters.
Therefore, my question is: since most factors in my application are quiet positive, but I also have this bleak spot in my application. Should I aim for a higher GMAT?
I did make a big effort to get to 730 (scored 680 twice before, with little study), but I’m confident that I could make it to 740 and maybe 750.
Would it be worth the effort? Would it increase my chances of making it into a top 15 school in the US?
Thanks!!!

ieosorioThanks for posting. Here is our assessment:
- Yes, if you feel that you can improve your score and take it to 750 and beyond, you should. No reason not to do that. A higher score definitely helps in top 15 admissions. This is not to say that the 730 is not good enough, but that the 750, if possible, will help further. However, don't spend too much time pursuing this. Give it 3-4 weeks, and if it happens, great. If not, that's fine too. You will also need to start focusing on applications now, which leaves lesser time available for the GMAT.
- To make up further for your low GPA and undergrad performance, you may consider taking courses from MBA Math or complete further quantitative coursework for credit from a local university (or even online, in these times). These will further bolster your application.
- You mentioned strategy consulting. Is this from a known, global firm or a boutique firm? If the former, it will add further to your application. 4 promotions in 4 years is something, and you also have significant international experience, as you put it in your post. These are all factors that will help support your application.
- This past application season (2020-21), we had someone with a ~2.9 GPA get into a top 10 school, and that too as a reapplicant. You can make it too, if you work hard, and plan well.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to come back with more questions as needed or to contact us directly at our email in our signature below for a 1-1 discussion.
