Hello everyone,

I am a male from Chile, 28 years old. I have over 4 years of experience in strategy consulting, 4 promotions, leadership role in my office, track record of volunteering, and wide international experience.

HOWEVER, my GPA is on the lower side. I have a 4.9 out of 7.0 GPA, which would be around a 3.0 GPA in a 4-point scale. I do have attenuating circumstances, and did finish my last 5 semesters with grades around 3.7 - 4.0, but the fact is that I did not manage to stand out in college. I rank in the bottom third of my graduation class.

It’s also worth mentioning that my low was very low. I faced personal problems that lead me to fail several classes in my third and fourth semesters.

Therefore, my question is: since most factors in my application are quiet positive, but I also have this bleak spot in my application. Should I aim for a higher GMAT?

I did make a big effort to get to 730 (scored 680 twice before, with little study), but I’m confident that I could make it to 740 and maybe 750.

Would it be worth the effort? Would it increase my chances of making it into a top 15 school in the US?

Thanks!!!

If you are concerned about your Undergraduate GPA, then a direct way to prove that you can perform at a high level in a University setting would be to take a new University-level class in a subject that is relevant to Business Schools (such as Statistics or Calculus). By earning a high grade in one of those types of classes NOW, you can prove that the person you are today is perfectly equipped to handle college-level curriculum.

Dear EMPOWERgmatRichC, thank you so much for your comments. A follow-up question if I might: what courses would you recommend? It would undoubtedly have to be an online course because of the covid situation in my country. I’ve heard that coursera is not a good option. Would you recommend for instance UCLA Extension or Berkeley Extension?

My dude, being from Chile (assuming you are a representative Chilean), means you are super unrepresented. I would not retake. 730 is good for anyone, but i would say Chilean and 730 GMAT is about equal to Indian and 760 GMAT. If you apply to every M7 school, I would be suprised if you didnt get an admit to one.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I would like to ask for an additional piece of advice. Do you think that passing the HBx CORe program (https://online.hbs.edu/courses/core/?_ga=2.30264317.338809708.1620661430-2051235577.1620356140) with High Honors would benefit at all my application? (thinking of top 15 schools)

I was just accepted but need to assess whether it's worth it before baying the +2,000 USD!

By the way, here is my more complete profile: https://gmatclub.com/forum/profile-review-356355.html?fl=notifications#p2779285

Hi ieosorio

Thanks for posting. Here is our assessment:
- Yes, if you feel that you can improve your score and take it to 750 and beyond, you should. No reason not to do that. A higher score definitely helps in top 15 admissions. This is not to say that the 730 is not good enough, but that the 750, if possible, will help further. However, don't spend too much time pursuing this. Give it 3-4 weeks, and if it happens, great. If not, that's fine too. You will also need to start focusing on applications now, which leaves lesser time available for the GMAT.
- To make up further for your low GPA and undergrad performance, you may consider taking courses from MBA Math or complete further quantitative coursework for credit from a local university (or even online, in these times). These will further bolster your application.
- You mentioned strategy consulting. Is this from a known, global firm or a boutique firm? If the former, it will add further to your application. 4 promotions in 4 years is something, and you also have significant international experience, as you put it in your post. These are all factors that will help support your application.
- This past application season (2020-21), we had someone with a ~2.9 GPA get into a top 10 school, and that too as a reapplicant. You can make it too, if you work hard, and plan well.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to come back with more questions as needed or to contact us directly at our email in our signature below for a 1-1 discussion.

Hi ieosorio,

An online course from a reputable Program (such as UCLA Extension or Berkeley Extension) would likely be a good option. I want to reiterate that since these are all Admissions-related questions, you should consult with an Admissions Expert on these issues.

There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

Hi ScottTargetTestPrep how are you? Kind of. So I decided to focus in the very short term on two things: (1) doing the TOEFL (scheduled for May 29th) and (2) working on MBA Math to compensate for my lower GPA. At the same time I’m starting to read, see videos and listen to podcasts about admission tips.

Having said that, I think that re-taking the GMAT is an alternative... maybe if everything else goes all right I might think about it in about a month or so.

Hi vikalpaul8

Please post your entire query. You are not evaluated on your GPA alone. Please provide details of your profile and which schools you are targeting, and we will be happy to help.

Also, you might want to start a new thread for queries on your profile as this one is exclusive to queries for ieosorio.
