What's up, GMATCLUB? Long-time lurker here. I'm a GMAT/LSAT/GRE tutor (who at some point will go to business school). I decided to take the GMAT again just for fun and noticed a few quirks this time around.
-RC passages were looooong, man. Three of the four passages I encountered were more than three paragraphs long! One was five paragraphs long and incredibly dense. The RC felt harder than anything I had ever experienced on the GMAT. That part of the test felt closer to LSAT RC than to GMAT RC, even the "advanced" RC materials that were recently released pale in comparison difficulty-wise. I was a full 8 minutes slower than usual and I'm 123% sure that RC's to blame. Spooky stuff... but the algorithm may have just been a little cranky that day. Although... I've been hearing similar reports/complaints from my students. Maybe it's part of a larger pattern.
-A couple of SC questions SEEMED to be testing for punctuation. Most SC questions this time around appeared to rely on idioms, but outside of those two things SC was business as usual.
-CR was incredibly easy this time around (although I became paranoid about this and Jedi mind tricked myself into selecting a wrong answer choice on a question near the end, something I realized immediately after I hit submit). I wonder whether much of the verbal section's difficulty was "used up" by the brutal RC.
Quant was pretty tame, save for 3 or 4 ridiculous questions that didn't even fully fit in the screen. Never have I had to scroll on the quant section before, but hey I guess there's a first time for everything. I will remark that the advanced questions guide that came out recently simulated the difficulty of the harder questions very well. I highly recommend it for students aiming for >49Q.
I must admit, it felt great to sit in front of that monitor again. I love this test, and the fact that it can still surprise me even after all of the experience I have dealing with it. Does anyone have any thoughts on the RC phenomenon I experienced? Is there reason to believe that the RC portion is getting tougher? What do you guys think?
