#1
The maximum volume of water that can pass through the floodgates is three times the volume which is normally allowed to flow through.
let vol of normal - v
so max flow ; 3v
v/3v =33%
sufficient
#2The area through which water is allowed to pass is normally less than one third of maximum.
max=v
area of water allowed ; is less than one third of maximum ; <1/3v
insufficient
IMO A

A certain dam regulates the volume of water that flows through its floodgates by reducing the area through which water can pass. Does the dam normally allow at least 30% of the maximum volume of water that can pass to flow through?

(1) The maximum volume of water that can pass through the floodgates is three times the volume which is normally allowed to flow through.

(2) The area through which water is allowed to pass is normally less than one third of maximum.

find if pass ≥ 3max/10

(1) The maximum volume of water that can pass through the floodgates is three times the volume which is normally allowed to flow through: sufic.
max = 3pass… p = x/3… x/3 ≥ 3x/10… 10x ≥ 9x, true.

(2) The area through which water is allowed to pass is normally less than one third of maximum: insufic.
pass < max/3: 0% max ≤ pass < 33.3% max, could be anything.

Is Volume(normal) > 30% of maximum volume?

(1) The maximum volume of water that can pass through the floodgates is three times the volume which is normally allowed to flow through.

The maximum volume can be 0 < V max. < 100 in percentage terms.
So normal volume can be 0 < V norm. < 33 1/3 in percentage terms

INSUFFICIENT.

(2) The area through which water is allowed to pass is normally less than one third of maximum.

V norm. < 33 1/3 of maximum volume.
Hence it can be 0 < V norm. < 33 1/3 of maximum volume same as option A.

INSUFFICIENT.

Together 1 and 2 no new information is given.

INSUFFICIENT.

IMO Answer E.

So Max V=3v, where v is normal flow...v=V/3 or v=33.33% of V
Sufficient as answer is Yes >30% of V
(2) The area through which water is allowed to pass is normally less than one third of maximum.
so v could be anything less than 33.33% of V. It could be 31%, then yes, but it could be 10% to, then no
Insuff

A

Are we taking a presumption that Area of opening is directly proportional to the Volume of Flow? But it only says that they have a relationship, and not direct proportionality.
