Hi,

I have taken the following approach to solve this question. I got the correct answer, but I wanted to check whether I have eliminated other options for the correct reason. Please correct me if I am wrong.

First, we will summarize the question stem.
The question stem says that some kind of gene is being stimulated in some of the cigarette smoker's bodies that metabolizes in the cells in such a way that they could become cancerous. But this phenomenon of gene stimulation is not so common and is applicable only for some cigarette smokers, still, all the cigarette smokers are at equal risk of developing lung cancer.

The bolded part is a fact and cannot be denied/contradicted.
We have to find out a reason that will always be true based on the question stem.

One reason that comes up is that there could be more than one factor that leads to developing lung cancer.

Let us go through the options

Quote:
Option A:- stimulation of the gene by chemicals in cigarette smoke is not the only factor affecting the risk for smokers of developing lung cancer
This option exactly states the same thing that we had thought(kept as the bold statement above). If there are more factors responsible for developing lung cancer in cigarette smokers than gene stimulation, then even if in some smokers the above-mentioned genes are not stimulated still they are at equal risk of developing lung cancer.
We can keep this option as of now.

Quote:
Option B:-nonsmokers have as high a risk of developing lung cancer as do smokers in whom the gene has not been stimulated
This is not relevant. In the question stem, we are only talking about smokers and we are not talking about non-smokers. We can eliminate this option.

Quote:
Option C:-smokers in whom the gene has been stimulated are more likely to develop lung cancer than are other smokers
This statement is going against the fact mentioned in the question stem. The question stem clearly mentions that all cigarette smokers are at an equal risk of developing lung cancer irrespective of the gene stimulation in their bodies. We cannot deny the fact mentioned in the question stem. We can eliminate this option.

Quote:
Option D:- the gene is more likely to be stimulated by chemicals in cigarette smoke than by other chemicals
We are not concerned about how the genes are stimulated, rather we are concerned about the fact that even if genes are not stimulated in some cigarette smokers still they are at equal risk of developing lung cancer. But this option only addresses the fact of how the genes are stimulated. So this is not relevant to the question stem. We can eliminate this option.

Quote:
Option E:-smokers are less likely to develop lung cancer if they do not have the gene
This statement is going against the fact mentioned in the question stem. The question stem clearly mentions that all cigarette smokers are at an equal risk of developing lung cancer irrespective of the gene stimulation in their bodies. We cannot deny the fact mentioned in the question stem. We can eliminate this option.

So only option A is left.
Option A is the answer.
