A certain language school has two classes for children. Is the range of ages, in years, of the children in the first class equal to the range of ages, in years, of the children in the second class?

(1) In each class, the number of children is 18 and the age of the youngest child is 8 years.
(2) In each class, the average (arithmetic mean) age of the children is 10 years.

Range of children in a class = Maximum age of a child - Minimum age of a child

To evaluate: Range 1 = Range 2

St. 1:
Minimum age is given, but no information about the maximum age in each class.

=> St. 1 is insufficient.

St. 2:
Only information about the mean.
We can't determine the max and min values in each class.

=> St. 2 is insufficient.

St. 1 and St. 2 together:
Sum of ages of all students in each class = 18*10 = 180 years

Age of youngest student in each class = 8

=> Sum of ages of other 17 students in each class = 172 years

We still can't find the age of the eldest student as any there could be many cases in which the sum of ages of 17 students equals 172 years.

=> Both 1 and 2 together are also insufficient.

=> Answer: E

Statement 1 :
Here only the age of youngest child is given, i.e., 8 years.
And the total number of children is 18.
From here we are unable to determine the range of ages of each class.
Thus insufficient.

Statement 2:
Here the average age of the children in given, i.e., 10 years.
Which is just insufficient to calculate the range of the ages.

Combining both statement, (for each class)
Here we can get the age of the eldest child, say X.
Now, (8 + X) / 2 = 10,
Or, X = 12,

Now the range will be 12 - 8 = 4.

Combining works.
Thus Sufficient.

IMO ans is C.
