A chain of volcanic islands spread over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim have been under close watch since the discovery of a new fault line in the area.

(A) A chain of volcanic islands spread over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim have been under close watch

(B) A chain of volcanic islands, spreading over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim, have been under close watch

(C) A chain of volcanic islands spread over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim has been under close watch

(D) Spread out over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim, a chain of volcanic islands were under close watch

(E) Spread out over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim, a close watch has been kept on a chain of volcanic islands

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

An Agreement error is found in several sentences. The subject of the sentence—“chain”—is singular and should agree with “has been,” not “have been.” “Islands” is NOT the subject. This error is in found in (A) and (B). Choice (D) has a similar Agreement error; “were” should be attached to a plural subject, not a singular subject such as “a chain.” This choice does NOT have a Modifier error, since the phrase “Spread out over several hundred miles of the Pacific Rim” does modify “a chain of volcanic islands,” but (E) does have a Modifier error, because here the modifying phrase that begins the sentence seems to be modifying “ a close watch.” It is illogical to state that “a close watch is spread over several hundred miles.” Choice (C) makes none of these errors.
