A contractor hired two paving firms to pave a parking lot. The first firm was to pave \(\frac{5}{8}\) of the parking lot, and the second firm was to pave the rest. On the first day, the first firm paved \(\frac{2}{3}\) of its portion and the second firm paved \(\frac{1}{2}\) of its portion. What fraction of the parking lot was not paved on the first day?
A. \(\frac{8}{48}\)
B. \(\frac{10}{48}\)
C. \(\frac{15}{48}\)
D. \(\frac{16}{48}\)
E. \(\frac{19}{48}\)
Say the parking lot is 48 unit^2 (we have 5/8, 2/3 and 1/2 there, so 48 = 8*3*2 might be a good number to work with, also all fractions in the options have 48 in the denominators).
The first firm was to pave \(\frac{5}{8}\) of the parking lot. So, it must pave 5/8*48 = 30 unit^2 and the second team must pave the remaining 18 unit^2.
On the first day, the first firm paved \(\frac{2}{3}\) of its portion, so it paved 2/3*30 = 20 unit^2 and the second firm paved \(\frac{1}{2}\) of its portion, so it paved 1/2*18 = 9 unit^2.
Totally they paved 20 + 9 = 29 unit^2 and 48 - 29 = 19 unit^2 is left to pave, which is 19/48 of the parking lot.
Answer: E.
Hope it helps.
