A contractor hired two paving firms to pave a parking lot. The first firm was to pave \(\frac{5}{8}\) of the parking lot, and the second firm was to pave the rest. On the first day, the first firm paved \(\frac{2}{3}\) of its portion and the second firm paved \(\frac{1}{2}\) of its portion. What fraction of the parking lot was not paved on the first day?

A. \(\frac{8}{48}\)

B. \(\frac{10}{48}\)

C. \(\frac{15}{48}\)

D. \(\frac{16}{48}\)

E. \(\frac{19}{48}\)

Source: Skills Insight

Work allocated to the first firm = 5/8 of the lot
Work allocated to the second firm = 3/8 of the lot

Day 1:
First firm did 2/3 of its work = (2/3)*(5/8) of lot = 5/12 = 20/48 of the lot
Second firm did 1/2 of its work = (1/2)*(3/8) of lot = 3/16 = 9/48 of the lot

So overall 29/48 of the lot was done on first day and 19/48 was remaining not done.

To add the fractions you need to make them over the same denominator

48 is one option and it makes sense to use it since all the answers have that denominator

Hope this helps!

Hello, people. Let’s get into this.

The first firm did 2/3 on the first day of 5/8 of the total paving = 10/24
And the second firm did 1/2 on the first day of 3/8 of the total paving = 3/16

Let’s add both fractions to get the total paving completed on the first day:

10/24 + 3/16
20/48 + 9/48
29/48 of the total paving was therefore DONE on the first day.

This means that 1 – (29/48) was not done: 19/48

(E) is your answer

Let total Parking lot size = 48 (Becuase all options have a denominator 48)

Target of First firm = (5/8)*48 = 30

Target of Second firm = (3/8)*48 = 18

1st Day work of first firm = (2/3)*30 = 20
1st Day work of Second firm = (1/2)*18 = 9
Work Done = 20+9 = 29

Remaining work = 49-29 = 19

Work as fraction - 19/48
