Kindly please explain question number 1 and question number 4.
Question number 1 states the primary purpose of the author:

The following are my para-summaries
Para 1: Introduces the topic of +ve and -ve approach regarding product advetising
Para 2: Explains the effect of both the type of advertising on the consumers and shows a preference to -ve approach
Para 3: Explains why -ve approach affects consumers
Para 4: Explains how -ve approach sometimes does not work.
From this all I can grasp is that the author tends to analyze one type of approach.

I could not find any option, which led to and pointed towards the above passage.

In question 4, the function of that line is to show a preferance towards -ve approach post the effect differences in consumers and creates a viewpoint for explaination for further analyses towards -ve approach. Only Option (B) gives me that option choice.

egmat Sajjad1994 Kindly please help me explain where I have actually gone wrong in my reasoning and my answer choices.

Why not option A for the 4th question. As it is been asked wrt to the whole passage

pls help with the 4th question. it seems A is correct

Official Explanation

4. Which of the following best describes the function of the highlighted sentence in the context of the passage as a whole?

Explanation

The subject of the question is the highlighted sentence and the task of the question is referenced by the phrase that describes the function, so this is a specific purpose question. Determine the role of the highlighted sentence. The highlighted sentence follows a sentence that introduces a contrast between positive advertising and negative advertising. The contrast is that negative advertising can appear more truthful than positive advertising.

This leads to the content of the highlighted sentence, which states that consumers more readily believe negative information compared to arguments made in favor of a brand or product, and the former often makes a stronger mental impression. The highlighted sentence closes a paragraph that leads into a conversation regarding why such advertising can be more memorable. Evaluate the answer choices individually, looking for one that reflects this idea.

Choice (A) contains the extreme language demonstrably superior. The sentence does not suggest that negative advertising is demonstrably superior, so eliminate (A).

Choice (B) is a memory trap. While the passage does describe the differences between the two strategies, this sentence does not summarize the main differences. Eliminate (B).

Choice (C) contains the extreme language that refutes the argument. The first paragraph does not contain an argument that this sentence could refute. Eliminate (C).

Choice (D) is a good description of the function of the sentence, so keep (D).

Choice (E) is a memory trap. This sentence states the impact of one strategy in comparison to one from earlier in the paragraph but evaluating what most experts believe is not the function of this sentence. Eliminate (E).

The correct answer is (D).

For instance, featuring a competitor in an advertisement can inadvertently provide a boost to the competing brand, even if the message is ultimately defamatory. Furthermore, negative advertising poses a risk that the audience will be alienated from both the competitor and the company criticizing it.

It is clearly stated in the paragraph that "negative advertising poses a risk that the audience will be alienated from both the competitor and the company criticizing it". So how do we deduce "Consumers may lose interest in petty feuds between rival companies." as a answer of Question 2.

Official Explanation

2. All of the following are mentioned as potential risks in advertising EXCEPT

Difficulty Level: 700

Explanation

The subject of the question is potential risks in advertising and the task of the question is referenced by the phrase the following are mentioned, so this is a retrieval question. Determine what the passage says are potential risks in advertising. The passage says that positive advertising can be perceived as insincere or predatory due to their reliance on manipulating emotions rather than presenting factual information and that can lead to skepticism…as consumers assume they are still being manipulated for the goal of producing positive feelings. Negative advertising that features a competitor can inadvertently provide a boost to the competing brand and poses a risk that the audience will be alienated from both the competitor and the company criticizing it. The passage also states that consumers who buy based on negative advertising may not [be] as loyal as those for whom merit guides the decision. Finally, there is a concern that consumers may view attacks on competitors as petty and untoward. This is an except question, so evaluate the answer choices looking for one that is not reflected by the information in the passage. Choice (A) is not mentioned as a potential risk in advertising so keep (A).

Choice (B) is listed as a risk when the passage states that negative advertising poses a risk that the audience will be alienated from both the competitor and the company criticizing it. Eliminate (B).

Choice (C) is listed as a risk of positive advertising. The passage states positive advertising can be perceived as insincere or predatory. Eliminate (C).

Choice (D) is not explicitly stated in the passage but is implied through statements such as consumers assume they are still being manipulated for the goal of producing positive feelings. Eliminate (D).

Choice (E) is referenced by the statement that negative advertising can inadvertently provide a boost to the competing brand. Eliminate (E). The correct answer is (A).

Explanation for Q1 & Q3 as well.

Official Explanation

1. The primary purpose of the passage is to

Difficulty Level: 550-600

Explanation

The subject of the question is the passage as a whole and the task of the question is referenced by the phrase primary purpose, so this is a primary purpose question. Determine why the author wrote the passage by using the key sentences approach.

The key sentence of the first paragraph is the introduction to the topic of the article, which is a critical aspect of product advertising is the choice between positive and negative approaches.

The second paragraph discusses the benefits and risks of both positive and negative advertising and concludes consumers may thus more readily believe negative information compared to arguments made in favor of a brand or product, and the former often makes a stronger mental impression.

The third paragraph explains why such advertising can be more memorable: negativity bias. The final paragraph sums up the final conclusion of the passage by stating In spite of these benefits, negativity in advertising is not always more effective than the alternative.

Evaluate the answer choices individually, looking for one that reflects the primary purpose of the passage.

Choice (A) uses the extreme language argue the inferiority. The passage does not argue for inferiority of one approach to another, but instead lays out the benefits and risks of each. Eliminate (A).

Choice (B) is a memory trap. The passage does explore the advantages of different forms of advertising, but it also explores the risks, and the primary purpose is not concerned with different audiences. Eliminate (B).

Choice (C) is a good paraphrase of the information in the passage, so keep (C).

Choice (D) is a memory trap as the passage does spend some time explaining what makes negative advertising effective, but this is the subject of only one paragraph and not the primary purpose of the passage. Eliminate (D).

Choice (E) is an appeal to outside knowledge. It is true that there is a need for companies to advertise their products, but the passage is unconcerned with this need. Eliminate (E).

The correct answer is (C).

Explanation for Q1 & Q3 as well.

Official Explanation

3. Which of the following could best serve as an example of negative advertising as it is described in the passage?

Difficulty Level: 500

Explanation

The subject of the passage is an example of negative advertising and the task of the question is referenced by the phrase as it is described in the passage, so this is a retrieval question. Determine how the passage describes negative advertising. The passage describes negative advertising as not painting a rosy sheen over its own products but rather warning consumers of a competitor’s flaw. Evaluate the answer choices individually, looking for one that could serve as an example of negative advertising based on this description.

Choice (A) is a memory trap as this would be an example of positive advertising. Eliminate (A).

Choice (B) is also an example of positive advertising, so eliminate (B).

Choice (C) is a good example of negative advertising as described in the passage. Keep (C).

Choice (D) is an example of one company criticizing another but is not an example of negative advertising as the environmental group is not trying to sell its product through the negative association with a competitor. Eliminate (D).

Choice (E) is not an example of negative advertising as described in the passage, so eliminate (E).

The correct answer is (C).
