A food science laboratory analyzed a set of 10 packaged snacks, recording several characteristics. Calories indicates the energy per serving, Protein is grams per serving, Origin refers to whether the snack was produced domestically, and Organic indicates whether the snack was certified organic.

SnackCaloriesProtein (g)Domestic origin? (Yes/No)Organic? (Yes/No)
Almond Crunch2206YesYes
Banana Chips1501NoNo
Carrot Crisps1803YesYes
Date Bites2102NoYes
Edamame Pack12011YesNo
Fig Bars1904YesNo
Granola Clusters2405NoYes
Hazelnut Squares2003YesNo
Inca Corn1702NoYes
Jackfruit Chips1601YesNo

For each of the following statements concerning the snacks in this sample, select Yes if the statement is supported by the information provided; otherwise, select No.
Question 1: For the non-organic snacks, the mode protein value is 3 grams.

The non-organic snacks and their respective protein values are mentioned below:

Banana Chips, Edamame Pack, Fig Bars, Hazelnut Squares, Jackfruit Chips.

The protein values in grams are 1, 11, 4, 3 and 1 respectively.

The value that appears most frequently (the mode) is 1 gram. Hence , NO.

Question 2: For the domestically produced snacks, the median protein content is greater than 3 grams.

The domestically produced snacks are : Almond Crunch, Carrot Crisps, Edamame Pack, Fig Bars, Hazelnut Squares, and Jackfruit Chips.

Their respective protein values are: 6, 3, 11, 4, 3 and 1 respectively.

After arranging in ascending order, the median value is (3+4)/2 = 3.5 grams.

3.5 grams is greater than 3 grams. Hence, YES

Question 3: Exactly one-third of the snacks are both non-domestic and organic.

The total number of snacks is 10.

The snacks that are both non-domestic and organic are:

Date Bites, Granola Clusters and Inca Corn.

Only 3 snacks qualify. 1/3 rd is 0.333. But, here it’s 3/10 = 0.3 which is less than 0.33. Hence, NO

The answers Would
No
Yes
No.

Mode is highest repeating number in this case protein. So for non organic we see 1gm is repeated twice. all other were once , Hence mode is 1

For second one domestically produced snack with protein content , if we arrange them in ascending order
we see the order as 1,3,3,4,6,11. The median of this is (3+4)/2=3.5 , which is greater than 3

For 3rd one : there are total 10 snacks out of which 3 are non-domestica and organic. 3 out of 10 is not 1/3 hence the answer should be No

1.
Protein values for Non organic snacks are: {1,3,4,11,1}
Mode is 1 not 3
Hence NO

2.
Protein content of domestically produced snacks {6,3,11,4,3,1}
In ascending order {1,3,3,4,6,11}
Median = (3+4)/2 = 3.5 i.e. greater than 3
Hence YES

3.
Snacks are both non-domestic and organic are Inca Corn, Granola Clusters and Date bites i.e 3 out of total 10 snacks
So, 3/10 =0.3 is not equal to 1/3=0.33
Hence NO

i immediately marked "no" for the third statement as soon as i stumbled upon "exactly one-third", recalling that there are total of 10 items and we cannot have an exact one-third of 10. is this reasoning dangerous ?

No, that’s good reasoning. I revised that option so the answer wouldn’t be too easy to spot:

• More than one-third of the snacks are both non-domestic and organic.

Non-domestic organic: Date Bites, Granola Clusters, Inca Corn (3 snacks). Out of 10 total, that’s 3/10, or less than one-third (0.333...).

Answer: No
