bb : Thank you for the clarification on 760+ seeming to be the new number to beat for many over-represented candidates. I like to tell candidates from those groups (e.g. Indian IT workers) that they need to subtract about 30 points from their score, and then use THAT to compare against a school's average to see if they are in the competitive range.

And egmat , your insights are extremely valuable! (I was thrilled to see you highlight both Mansi and Viktor above, both of whom were also ApplicantLab users!) :)

One of the key things I teach in the Lab is what admissions committees are looking for, and the role of leadership can not be understated!

While a high GMAT score alone doesn't guarantee that someone will get in, a LOW score will essentially guarantee that someone will get rejected.

At a minimum, schools want to be certain that the applicant can handle the workload of the program...and hey, if accepting this person helps nudge their average GMAT score just a bit higher, which in turn helps their rankings go up a bit...well then, so much the better! This is one of the reasons why a higher GMAT score tends to result in more scholarship money, to lure the candidate to their school.

You may want to read this blog post or watch this video where I talk about why a strong GMAT score is "necessary but not sufficient" for acceptance to a top program:

Hello Maria/ApplicantLab,
Good Morning/Good Evening,

I just finished finished watching the video that you have mentioned and I don't know whether this is the best place to ask this question or not but I will go ahead and ask it.

The top of the pyramid "Leadership Potential" that you mentioned is what bothers me the most (and probably most of the other candidates). Yes, I am an Indian Male IT Engineer.
I have nearly 6 years of experience in a traditional role in a large IT company (as you generalised in the video). I don't have particular extraordinary situations to mention in which I have demonstrated extra-ordinary leadership qualities. There are situations and appreciations throughout the work experience in which I can prove certain aspects but not something exceptional. I don't have a very specific question here but can you talk more about it? How much should I be worried? How much of a make or break situation it will be for someone like me in this role?

P.S: I have an academic advantage (at least I hope it is an advantage). I am a Gold Medalist (Rank 1) from University of Mumbai in Information Technology specialisation for the year 2013. I don't know how the scale but probably Rank 1 out of 50,000 people who took the exam across all the colleges affiliated to University Of Mumbai. The percentage scored was 82.47%.

I will appreciate your inputs and apologies if I could not convey my point properly.

You should be worried if you have little leadership experience. However, make sure that you understand how to look for leadership in your career:

Academic Advantage

While it does give you a leg up in the CGPA aspect, it will not address lack of leadership. This is something that you will need to address.

Hello Rajat/egmat
Thank you for your response.

I read both the articles that you have mentioned. I fully understand the fact that demonstrating leadership does not require one to have people reporting to him/her. I can think of examples involving qualities of aligning people and providing motivation. But they are not huge. And I feel I can convert them into qualitative rather than quantitative. I also was in planning and executing committee of CSR in my organisation. And out of 6 years, almost 2 years of experience is for 2 major US Clients. Will that also play a factor in terms of how I present it?

Also,
Is academic advantage only in terms of CGPA? The scale doesn't matter? I was thinking this is something I can present as a strong aspect on my essays.
