A library currently has only coin-operated photocopy machines, which cost 10 cents per copy. Library administrators are planning to refit most of those machines with card readers. The library will sell prepaid copy cards that allow users to make 50 copies at 9 cents per copy. Administrators believe that, despite the convenience of copy cards and their lower per-copy cost, the number of copies made in the library will be essentially unchanged after the refit. On the assumption that administrators' assessment is correct, which of the following predictions about the effect of the refit is most strongly supported by the information given?A. Library patrons will only purchase a copy card on days when they need to make 50 or more copies.
Not necessarily, it is given in the passage that number of copies will remain the same, there can be instances where you have 20 copies made today and 30 later, so you could still purchase.
B. No library patrons will increase their usage of the library's photocopy machines once the refit has been made.
Too Extreme, but, we should not eliminate because it is too extreme. The justification is there could be some patrons who might increase and relatively some patrons who decrease to maintain the total copies made at the library to be not changed.
C. If most of the copy cards sold in the library are used to their full capacity, the number of people using the library's photocopy machines over a given period will fall.
Easy elimination, how can the number of people fall, it could also increase or fall, even if most of the copy cards sold are in full capacity i.e. card machines are almost at full capacity or card machines are at full capacity, others can still use coin operated machines.
D. Revenues from photocopying will decrease unless most library patrons choose to use the remaining coin-operated machines in preference to the card-reader equipped ones.
How can we say that the revenue will decrease, we could have cases where people buy a card and not use it, or under-use it so revenue could increase
E. Revenues from photocopying will increase if copy cards that are purchased are, on average, used to significantly less than 90 percent of their capacity.
Yes, this is perfect, now gmat has vagueness and wants to use our own value of significantly less (i.e) give a number on your own, but we don't need to do that, if copy cards are purchased 50 copies at 9 cents per copy and if you use only 90% ie make 45copies, 90% of 50, then total cost you have paid is 450 because a card has min 50 copies at 9 cents a copy. you paid 450 and got 45 copies ie 10 cent per copy so already we are breaking even, if it is even slightly less or significantly less then revenues must increase. Mind you the only other way is to use coin operated which is already at 10 cents per copy.
