A lost and hungry vagabond happened upon a pair of travelers one of whom had three loaves of bread while the other had five. All of the loaves were the same size and weight. The two travelers decided to share their bread with the vagabond, and that the eight loaves should be shared equally among the three of them. When they had finished, the vagabond reached into his pocket and pulled out eight coins. In what ratio should the eight coins be split between the traveler who had three loaves of bread and the traveler who had five loaves of bread?

A. 7:1
B. 5:3
C. 3:5
D. 1:7
E. 1:8

Since it is distributed amongst 3, resulting in 8/3, a fraction, for each, we can change them to total 24 loaves in ratio 3:5 = 9:15.

When they are distributed, each gets 8:8:8. The vagabond has 8 coins, so 1 for each loaf he got.
He got and paid in the ratio (9-8):(15-8)=1:7

The way I arrived at the answer was that obviously the portion the second guy shared was far more than the portion first guy shared, The only difference I liked 1:7 and 1:8, 1:8 is more than the proportion and thus went with 1:7. Simply put, the amount that first guy would have shared would be around 1.5pieces(Just an estimate for understanding) and rest all will be shared the other guy.

Also, simply on this logic could eliminate A & B, C was too close in ratio. Thus last two options seem like the ideal candidate.

Is my approach correct?

So, the person who has 3 loaves of bread - gives 8/3 out of it to the vagabond and he himself is left with 1/3 for consumption. Similarly person with 5 loaves of bread given 8/3 and he himself consumes =7/3. Why are we taking ratios of the ones left for them to consume?
as per my understanding, he didnt give out 1/3 and 7/3 - that is left for their consumption after giving out 8/3 by each.

No, so at the end all three travellers have 8/3 loaves of bread (since it is asked in the ques. eight loaves should be shared equally among the three)

So, the person who had 3 loaves of bread now has 8/3 loaves of bread - so he gives 3 - 8/3 => 1/8 loaves of bread.

Similarly, the person who had 5 loaves gives 5 - 8/3 => 7/8 loaves of bread.

So, they gave 1/8 and 7/8 loaves, and got 1/8:7/8 => 1:7 coins.

8 loaves are shared equally among the three.

This means that each consumes 2 2/3 loaves.

So the man with 3 loaves contributes 9/3 - 8/3 = 1/3 to the vagabond

And the man with 5 loaves contributes 15/3 - 8/3 = 7/3 to the vagabond

So the ratio of their contributions is (1/3)/(7/3) = 1:7
