Let total distance traveled by him is 2x
Speed of man in downstream = (5+1)= 6 mph
Speed of man in upstream= (5-1)= 4mph

\(\frac{x}{6}\)+\(\frac{x}{4}\)= 1

\(\frac{2x+3x}{12}\)= 1

5x= 12; x=\(\frac{12}{5}\)= 2.4

So, total distance traveled by him is 2x= 2*2.4= 4.8

Answer: E.
