Let total distance traveled by him is 2x
Speed of man in downstream = (5+1)= 6 mph
Speed of man in upstream= (5-1)= 4mph

$$\frac{x}{6}$$+$$\frac{x}{4}$$= 1

$$\frac{2x+3x}{12}$$= 1

5x= 12; x=$$\frac{12}{5}$$= 2.4

So, total distance traveled by him is 2x= 2*2.4= 4.8
