total distance = 12
solve for x ; 3x-1+3x+1 = 12; x = 2
downstream distance ; 3*3 ; 9 km and upstream dist ; 3 * 1 ; 3 km
total distance need to be covered ; 6km
upstream speed = (x-1 ) ; (2-1 ) ; 1 kmph
total time ; 6 hrs ;

(r+1)3+(r-1)3=12, 6r=12, r=2
3hr down: (r+1)3=3*3=9km
3hr up: (r-1)3=1*3=3km
difference to starting point: 9-3km=6km
