A retailer sold X pieces of the gaming station at an average price of $445. Later, he sold Y pieces of the gaming station at an average price of $425. What was the average price of X+Y pieces of gaming station?
(1) Y = X/2
(2) Total pieces of the gaming station sold = 50

The average price of x+y pieces = (445x + 425y)/(x+y)
To find the average price we need either values of x and y or x in terms of y
Statement 1: Y = X/2
SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: Total pieces of the gaming station sold = 50

Solution
Step 1: Analyse Question Stem
• X pieces of gaming station were sold at an average $ 445
o The total price of X pieces of gaming station = $ X*445
• Y pieces of gaming station were sold at an average price of $ 425
o The total price of Y pieces of gaming station = $ Y*425
• The total price of X+Y pieces of gaming station \(= $(X*445 + Y*425)\) • We need to find the average price of X+Y pieces of gaming station i.e. \(\frac{(X*445+Y*425)}{X+Y} ………. Eq.(i) \)
o alternately, we need to find the value of X and Y or the ratio of X and Y to find the value of Eq.(i)
• Substituting \(Y=\frac{X}{2}\) in Eq.(i), we get,
o Required average = \(\frac{X*(445 +425*0.5) }{X(1+ 0.5)} = \frac{2}{3} *( 445 + \frac{425}{2})\)
• Hence, statement 1 is sufficient and we can eliminate answer options B, C and E
Statement 2:Total pieces of the gaming station sold = 50
• From this statement we cannot find the value of X and Y, therefore we cannot find the value of average price. • Hence, statement 2 is not sufficient and we can eliminate answer D.
Thus, the correct answer is Option A.
